Chapter 1: How Hillary rules the world

Slowly, she raised her head. With a confused look on her face, she looked at her surroundings. She didn’t recognize anything. She was lying in a white, bald room. Even the curtains were white. She was about to stand up, but she wasn’t able to. She looked down. She was lying in a white bed and several tubes seemed to enchain her to it.
What am I supposed to do?
She opened her mouth, wanted to cry for help, but no sound left her lips. Only a raucous cawing. Panic made its way up her throat. She couldn’t move, couldn’t talk. In what universe was she in? Again, she glanced around. There had to be something. Anything to make herself perceivable. A kind of remote caught her eyes. Slowly, she reached out her hand. It felt stiff, like she hadn’t used it in a long time. Only with great efforts, she was able to catch it and to push the only button which was on it. But nothing happened. No sound. Even the TV, which was hanging on the wall, didn’t spring to life.
I have my guts for garters.
Suddenly, a red light over her bed caught her eyes. It hadn’t shone before, she was sure about that. A ray of hope spread into her body. Maybe somebody would notice her. Several moments passed. Again, she looked around the room. She couldn’t identify anything. Nothing she had seen before.
What happened to me?
All of a sudden, the white door opened and a young man entered. As their eyes met, the man, dressed in white, began to whisper. She wasn’t able to understand him. Once again, she opened her mouth but anew she couldn’t make herself understandable. Slowly, the man approached to her. She couldn’t classify the look on his face. It was something between shock and disbelief. He said something, she couldn’t understand. It was a different language, she was sure about that.
How did I get here?
The man, again, said something. And again, she couldn’t understand a word he said. Over and over, she shook her head, shrugged. Suddenly, the man spoke something she actually could understand. “You English?” he asked.
She nodded, wanted to say something, but again just a cawing. The man seemed to notice the dilemma, she was in. He looked around, then said,
“Wait. Okay?”
Another nod. Then, the man left the room. Uncomfortable minutes passed. Then, the young man reentered the room, in company of an older woman.
“Do you understand me?” she asked.
She nodded.
“You are in a hospital. Been here for quite a time. Do you know who you are?” she asked.

She thought about it. How long she couldn’t say. But slowly the truth reached her mind. She didn’t know her name, where she came from or what had happened. Panic, once again, rose inside of her. But she tried to remain calm, maybe this was just a silly joke. It had to be a silly joke…
She shook her head.

I don’t know my name.

Thoughtful, the lady nodded. She said something to the young man. Again she couldn’t understand the language. Then, the woman turned to her again, and said,
“Don’t panic. That can happen. You’ve been in a coma for two years. Surely, you will remember. Joaquin will get a doctor, who will examine you. In the meantime, I’m gonna ask you some questions, okay?”
Another nod.
“Do you have any clue, where you are, besides at a hospital?”
Head-shaking.
“Okay. You are in Spain. Madrid, to be exact. Do you know where Spain is?”
She opened her mouth and for the first time, she could articulate clearly.
“Europe,” she said quietly.
Something like a smile appeared on the woman’s face.
“That’s right. So, do you know where you are coming from?”
She thought about it again. She racked her brain but nothing happened. She just didn’t know.
“Well,” the woman said, “We will find out, I’m sure.”
She wanted to speak further but a doctor entered the room.
“Ah, somebody finally woke up,” he smiled, “I’m really glad you did. You’ve been kind of a mystery to us, you know. My name is Dr. Jiménez. I’ve been caring for you for two years now. How are you feeling?”
She cleared her throat and then, quietly said,
“Confused. I feel like President Bush about Iraq.”
Dr. Jiménez let out a laugh.
“Then, you will be really pleased to hear that he isn’t president anymore. Hillary rules the world now.”

She looked up. That was great. Hillary Clinton was great. She was a fantastic role-model for everybody. She remembered watching a very long interview with her. She had been so confident and not at all concerned about her husband’s affairs.
“Yeah,” she smiled, “she’s great.”
Thoughtfully the woman looked from her to the doctor.
“How come she knows about Hillary Clinton but nothing about herself?”
Dr. Jiménez subtly shook his head.
“We will find out about that,” he said and then, turning towards her again, added, “Don’t worry about anything. You are going to be fine. You’re just confused. It was too much for today. Try to sleep, try to clear your head, okay? If you need anything, Cristina here will be around.”
With those words and a last look at her, both, doctor and nurse, left the room.

She was alone again, worrying about herself, about the past, she couldn’t remember at all. But she was too exhausted, too tired to think it thru. She closed her eyes and fell into a fitful sleep.
