Dieses Chap is fuer euch beide!
Chapter 14 Just like Tom and Meg
So while I’m turning in my sheets, and once again I cannot sleep. Walk out the door and up the street, I got the stars beneath my feet. Remember rights that I did wrong. So here I go.
Aimlessly, Luke wandered around in the dark. He had left the hotel, where he stayed together with Rory for the night, hours ago. Rory had been dead asleep, happy, they finally found her mother but Luke hadn’t been able to find any sleep at all.
It was almost 3 o’clock in the morning now and Luke found himself standing in front of the hospital. He would not be allowed to see her, he knew that, but somehow he didn’t care. He entered Virginia Mason almost soundlessly and without being noticed by any of the nurses, he was standing in front of room 1408. Silently, he stepped inside. There, too, it was pitch-black and totally silent. He decided to go away again. He didn’t want to wake her up. But as he was about to close the door, he heard Lorelai moan. He stepped closer to her then he could hear her mumble in her sleep.
“Don’t. Please, don’t. Luke… I need you. Don’t. It’s not worth it. Come down please. Luke! No!”
Carefully, Luke put on hand on Lorelai’s shoulder and whispered,
“It’s okay. I’m here, hon.”
Lorelai turned around, eyes wide open.
“What’s happening, Luke? You just jumped…”
“Shh… calm down. It was just a nightmare.”
Lorelai sat up and sighed relieved. Then a few moments silence.
“What are you doing here?” she asked softly.
“I couldn’t sleep, you know. Too many thoughts were swirling around my head.”
“So, you’re pulling a Sam Baldwin here?”
As Luke looked irritated, Lorelai added,
“You know… Tom Hanks,” she slightly grinned and switched on the lights.
“Ah, I got that… Sleepless in Seattle,” he replied. “Yeah, I suppose so.”
A few moments passed in silence, they were both staring at each other. Luke felt like he was flying somehow, he was able to see her again, touch her again, listen to her inappropriate jokes again. But still, something bugged him. It was the fact that he didn’t know yet why she had left him eight months ago.
He took a deep breath and then asked the question. It was the question, which wanted to be asked for ages. It was the question which was hanging over Luke’s head since he had found her.
“Lorelai… you didn’t leave because of the… of the baby… did you?”
Lorelai didn’t answer immediately instead she took Luke’s hand and squeezed it softly. Luke, who had been staring at a point right above Lorelai’s head, looked down into her eyes. He could see them shimmering. Right at this moment, Luke was so relieved to be able to look into those blue eyes that he almost missed the beginning of Lorelai’s answer.
“No, Luke, I didn’t leave because of the baby. I always wanted kids with you, you know that. I really would have been the happiest person in the world… but… I couldn’t be happy. There was something that made it impossible for me to anticipate the baby, to feel happy that we’d finally reproduce. One week after I discovered that I was pregnant, I went to the doctor’s. Just to be sure, I really was. I didn’t want to disappoint you, if it wasn’t true, by telling you. So I went there…”

Lorelai broke off. Tears were streaming down her cheeks now. Luke felt the strong urge to wipe them away, but somehow he wasn’t able to lift his hand. So he just sat there immobile and stared at her. Then, after what seemed like hours to him, Lorelai continued.
Flashback
“Mrs. Danes?”
Lorelai stood up with a jolly sensation in her stomach and got out of the waiting-room into the doctor’s office. She looked around. There were so many pictures of moms and dads with a little baby in their arms that Lorelai’s excitement rose even more. She felt sure that she was pregnant. She had it in her guts. She almost could see Luke’s shining face when she would tell him.
“Mrs. Danes?”
The doctor’s voice brought her back to the present.
“Yeah?” she asked excited. “I am pregnant, aren’t I?”
Dr. Sanders sat down behind his bureau and slightly nodded.
“Yes, you are.”
Lorelai sprang up, walked over to him and hugged him.
“Oh my god, you’re my favorite person in the world right now,” she beamed.
She felt like she was flying, her feet weren’t even touching ground anymore. She was so glad like she had never been before.
But then, she got a glimpse of the Dr. Sanders face and an uneasy feeling rose inside of her. Slowly, she sat down again, staring at her doctor.
“What’s… what’s wrong?” she stammered.
“Mrs. Danes… I’m so sorry to tell you this. I mean you’re supposed to be happy.”
“Why… is something wrong with the baby?”
Lorelai had become stiff, her eyes had changed into a fearful black and her hands were suddenly sweating.
“The baby is fine, Lorelai,” he began. “But you are sick. I’m sorry to tell you, but you have cancer.”
Bang! There it was. The doctor’s words echoed in Lorelai’s head like a gunshot.
Cancer.
She had cancer. Shock frozen she sat there, staring at his pitiful face. Everything around her became blurry. One moment she had been the happiest person in the world and another moment she was crushed. She didn’t know what to say or what to do next. She just kept on sitting there, unable to think straight.
“Where is it?” she finally managed to ask.
“It’s breast cancer. We did some research and we’re lucky. We caught it at an early stage. Of course you have to go to a specialist but your survival chances are probably very high.”
Lorelai subtly nodded.
“What about the baby? Can I still…?” she wasn’t able to finish her sentence because now, tears started to roll down her cheeks.
“Well,” he began. “That’s the thing. You’ll need chemotherapy. As you probably know this is very aggressive and the baby will either die or be disabled. I’m so sorry.”
Lorelai said nothing. She couldn’t believe that she was actually sitting there.
It had to be a silly joke. She almost felt sure that in any time soon, Ashton Kutcher would show up behind the desk and scream “You’ve been Punk’d!”
But none of that did happen.
“Mrs. Danes? Are you listening to me?”
The doctor’s voice brought her back to reality.
“There has to be an alternative,” she desperately said. “What if I won’t do the chemotherapy? What if I keep the baby and start the treatment after it’s born?”
Softly, Dr. Sanders stood up and laid one hand upon Lorelai’s shoulder.
“It will be too late then. It’s seems unfair to say it like that… but it’s either your life, or the baby’s life. You don’t have to decide immediately. Go home for now. Talk to your husband, to your daughter or anybody else, who’s important to you. You’ve got a tough decision to make.”
Flashback
As Lorelai stopped talking, Luke could feel his own tears dripping onto his hand. He hadn’t been aware that he was crying. He looked down at his hand, which was still squeezed by Lorelai’s now shaky one. He wasn’t able to say anything. His wife had cancer. It felt like his world swished around him. Suddenly all the things became clearer. After a few more minutes in silence, only interrupted by Lorelai’s occasional sobs, he asked,
“Why didn’t you go home? Why didn’t you tell me… us? Why did you…?”
“I did go home, Luke. I really wanted to tell you. But as I saw you that day… as I saw your face… I just couldn’t… it was too hard. So I pretended that nothing was wrong. I remember we ate pizzas and marshmallows that night…”
“It was the night before you threw up, wasn’t it? It was the night before you asked, if I loved you… It was the night before you left,” Luke said very silently but his voice was surprisingly steady, besides his still rolling tears.
