Paved Paradise: Arrangements
Disclaimer: Do not own. Do not sue.
Lorelai didnât get home until early the next morning. Christopher offered to go in with her but Lorelai refused when she saw Lukeâs truck in her driveway.
Lorelai kicked off her shoes, dropped her hand bag, and inhaled the wonderful aroma of Lukeâs coffee.
âLuke,â Lorelai called out, âLuke, Iâm here.â
Luke, dressed in only his jeans, stepped out of the bathroom and went to Lorelai, taking her in his arms, âWhere were you? Itâs almost six.â
âI know,â Lorelai said against his shoulder, âI had some calls to make and we needed to wait for the bodies to be released.â
Luke tightened his hold on Lorelai, âHow you holding up, Honey?â
Lorelai pulled away, âWow! You never called me honey before.â
âSure I did,â said Luke, ânot a lot, but I did at least once.â
Lorelai shook her head, âNope, you never called me Honey or Sweetie or anything but Lor or Lorelai,â she continued, âGeez, if this is what it takes to get you to be sensitive.â
âLorelai, come sit down and Iâll get you some coffee,â Luke told her, trying to check his temper and understand Lorelaiâs vulnerability.
âIâm sorry,â she said, âIâm just really screwed up right now and Christopher is coming back at noon to take me to the funeral place.â
âItâs all right,â Luke replied, âI could take you to the funeral place. Chris must have to get back to Sherri.â
âThey split,â Lorelai told him as she accepted the travel mug of coffee, âShe finally drove him crazy with her nagging,â Lorelai took a long sip. Luke remained silent.
âWhereâs Rory and Jess?â Lorelai asked after a few minutes.
âRoryâs asleep in her room and Jess isâ¦â
âRight here,â Jess grumbled wiping the sleep out of his eyes, âIâm up this early so I can open the diner for Luke,â Jess replied to the unasked question.
âThatâs all right, Jess,â Luke told him, âYou stay with Rory, I got it.â
Jess shook his head, âI talked to Rory about it. Sheâs going to help out with the lunch rush, by then you and Lorelai should be finished with what you have to do, then Rory and I canâ¦â
âJess,â Luke interrupted, âLorelai is going with Christopher to do the planning.â
Jess raised an eyebrow at Luke, âOkay,â he said, âbutâ¦â
The phone rang on the table and Jess made leap for it, âGilmore residence.â
âHello, Luke? Itâs Sookieâ¦â
âUm, hi, Sookie. Itâs not Luke, its Jess,â Jess said into the phone.
âNot funny, Luke,â Sookie scolded, âI canât believe youâd be making up something like that at a time like this.â
âOkay, I see we are still not the Queen of Normal here,â Jess mumbled, then, Luke, âLuke! Sookie.â
Luke took the phone from Jess, âHey, Sookie. Whatâs up?â
âThat really was Jess,â Sookie said surprised.
âYes,â Luke replied, âthat really was Jess. He came in last night. What can I do for you?â
âI wanted to talk to Lorelai, see how she was doing. I heard about her parents,â Sookie told him. Luke could be so protective at times.
âIâll see if sheâs up to it. Hold on,â Luke said putting the phone down and going to kneel in front of Lorelai, âLor, its Sookie, Baby, you want to talk to her?â
Lorelai stood up and Luke rose with her, âNot right now, Luke,â she spat out quickly before jetting upstairs.
âUm, Sookie,â Luke said picking up the receiver, âSheâs not up to it right now. Iâll tel her to call you later, okay? Bye.â
Luke hung up the phone and tried to follow Lorelai upstairs when the phone rang again, âYeah,â Luke barked into the phone.
âLuke, its Dean,â the voice on the other end of the phone said.
âDean, sheâs sleeping,â Luke said flatly, not wanting to have to settle a Dean/Jess wrestle mania on top of everything else, âIâll tell her you called,â Luke hung up and started up after Lorelai again, unplugging the phone as he went.
Meanwhile, Jess had gone to wake Rory before going to the diner. He pulled the curtains open and raised the shade.
âRise and shine, Rorâ¦â he gently greeted, âItâs six-thirty.â
âThat better be pm,â she grumbled.
âNope, am. I got up early to help Luke at the diner. I wanted to see if you needed me here though,â Jess explained. This felt awkward.
âIf I say yesâ¦â
âIf you say yes, screw the diner, Luke can close for the day,â Jess told her with firm gentleness.
âAnd if I say noâ¦â
âIf you say no, Iâll do the breakfast rush; you help out with lunch like we talked about last night. Then when Luke gets there I make us a couple of Jess burgers,â he said.
Rory thought a moment, âIn that case, go to Lukeâs, help out. I want more sleep. Iâll meet you at the bridge at one, okay? Then we can talk, we have to talk,â she said snuggling down into the covers again.
Jess lowered the shade and quietly moved to leave the room, âJess.â
Roryâs voice stopped him in his tracks, âYeah,â he replied.
âThanks for letting me count of you,â Rory murmured dozing off again.
âNow and forever,â Jess whispered, âI promise.â
Luke followed Lorelai up to the big bathroom and gently wrapped on the door, âLorelai. Lorelai, come on out and talk to me. Itâs only me. Just Luke.â
âGo away, please,â Lorelai told him, her voice very even, eerily calm.
âLorelai, come on. Open the door. Youâve been through a lot, letâs talk,â Luke tried again.
There was silence on the other side of the door at first, the lock unlatched and the knob turned. Luke opened his arms to receive Lorelai but instead she pushed him hard, out of the way.
âLorelaiâ¦â Luke said, shocked.
âLuke, get out of here. I need you to leave here,â she told him.
âNo,â he replied, âLor, I know this is hard and itâs a shock, and I know youâre trying to be strong and keep it together for Rory, but itâs me.â
âLuke, I all ready asked you once. Please leave. Go home. Go to the diner, just leave me alone,â Lorelai ordered. âThis is why I didnât call you! Why I didnât call you when it happened! You smother m, Big strong Luke to the rescue, the big hero, well I donât need to be rescued and I donât want a hero. I want to be left alone! Please!â
âLorelai, I canât leave you alone. You shouldnât do this all aloneâ¦â
âI wonât be alone, Luke. Thatâs why I called Christopher so he could be here with me. Luke, I really need for you to go,â Lorelai said evenly. She knew if she got angry at him lashed out, hurt him, heâd leave; go off to lick his wounds. Then she could function, then she could hold on.
âLorâ¦â
She cut him off and covered her face with her hands, âPlease, Luke. Go home. I donât need you here. I donâtâ¦I donât want you her right now. Please go.â
Finally, Luke gave up and went down the stairs and out the door. His knees buckled as he sat down on the porch, head in his hands.
Jess heard the door slam and called out, âLuke!â When no one answered him, Jess headed for the porch where he found Luke sad and defeated.
âLuke,â Jess said, âum, whatâsâ¦why arenât you upstairs with Lorelai. I said Iâd help Caesar out today.â
Luke shook his head, âShe doesnât want me there, Jess. She told me to go. She says I smother her. Of course I do, I love her. Iâm going to marry her.â
Jess listened to Lukeâs words. He knew how attentive Luke was to Lorelai, he also recalled how stubborn and independent Lorelai could be, âLuke that woman is stubborn and strong and tough,â Luke didnât let him finish, he shook his head.
âThatâs a public face, Jess. Lorelaiâs able toâ¦she can let go with me.â
âExactly,â Jess replied, âyou let her lose her control. She canât do that right now.â
âBut she should. She lost her parents, God, that hurts, and I know it hurts,â Luke said with more emotion than Jess had ever seen from him, âBut her not wanting me there hurts even worse.â
âWell,â Jess sighed, âYou have two choices. Go back to the diner with me, lick your wounds, like she expects and wait until she comes to you. Or, you go back in there, tell her you get it, you understand and that when she needs you, youâll be there.â
Luke smiled at Jess and gave him a quick hug, âWhen did you get so smart?â Luke asked.
âI read,â Jess replied, âGo on. Tell Rory Iâll see her at one.â
Luke nodded and went back up the porch into the house.
âI thought I told you to leave,â Lorelai said sipping a fresh cup of coffee on the sofa.
âYeah, I heard you, but I couldnâtâ¦Lorelai, put the mug down and listen to me, then Iâll go,â Luke told her, âI know what youâre doing.â
âLuke,â she groaned but he continued, âLorelai, you are so strong, you are always so in control and together, with your best foot forward, and I admire that. But I also admire how you know you can let your guard down with me and you can now, Lor. Iâve been there, it hurts, it really, really hurts. I get that feeling,â Luke paused, he was not used to heart to hearts, but with Lorelai it was right, âAnd I get that you feel you canât lose control now, that youâre the reigning the Gilmore and I get you trust me enough to lose control. So, I wonât push, but when youâre ready Iâll be here,â he told her rising from the coffee table where heâd been sitting, âResume coffee drinking.â
Luke turned and headed in the directions of the kitchen, âLuke,â Lorelai called out to him. He paused and turned to face her, âI love you for getting me,â Luke smiled and his eyes softened, âI love you for being you,â he replied before going out to the kitchen.
âYour mother chose the metal casket for your grandmother years ago. This on is lovely and can be used for both sexes, as the linings and the handles are interchangeable, so this one can be used for both your mother and your father.â
Lorelai listened to the funeral director at Hartford East Memorial Home droan on and on about caskets, handles, plates, and insurance for the past two hours. Christopher stayed by her side the whole time and listened to the information Mr. Roth, the funeral director was giving her.
âLor,â Christopher said, âThese caskets are nice and reasonable.â
âYes, at three thousand ten dollars each, they are quite nice for their price. For both, Iâll naturally give you a deal, $5900 for the lot including the brass handles for your father and the rose etched brass one for your mother,â Mr. Roth quoted.
Lorelai was sick of it all. She wanted it over with. Not just the arrangements, but everything the wakes, the funeral, everything, âAll right,â she agreed, finally, âLetâs get this done.â
Roth smiled dimly, âAll right, Ms. Gilmore, letâs go up to my office and sign the papers. After that, Iâll give you a list of funeral readings and hymns to choose from.â
Lorelai nodded, âUm , Tom,is thereâ¦what about the eulogy?â
âGenerally the eulogy is delivered by a family member, but sometimes it can be written and someone else can read it for you,â Mr. Roth explained, âYou can decide that and lt me know at the wake.â
Lorelai nodded, âThank you, Mr. Roth for the information.â
âNo problem, Ms. Gilmore. If youâll just sign by the X and initial by the circle we can get this finished,â Mr. Roth pushed two forms towards Lorelai.
âWhat are these pages, Mr. Roth?â Christopher asked for Lorelai as she started reading.
âThe white one is to confirm the order for the caskets, lining, and handles. The blue one is a promise that Ms. Gilmore will pay whatever Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore life insurance policies do not cover,â the white haired man explained.
Lorelai scoffed at that, âMy parentâs policies will more than cover this.â
âItâs just a precaution,â Mr. Roth replied, âThe X and the circle.â
Lorelai finished reading the contract and signed her name with a flourish of the pen.
âAll right, Ms. Gilmore, Mr. Hayden,â Mr. Roth said rising, âthatâll just about do it. Weâll see you Thursday afternoon. We aske the family to arrive about 1:30 pm. See you then.â
Lorelai nodded and Chris shook the manâs hand as he and Lorelai left the memorial home.
âYou okay, Lor,â Chris asked, a guiding hand at her back.
âYeah, Iâm good. Iâm just glad itâs over, that guy was creepy,â Lorelai gave a mock shiver.
âNo one ever said funeral directors were normal people,â Christopher commented then he sighed, âLorelai, I need you to be serious for a minute, okay?â
âChris, Iâm really fine,â Lorelai said, trying to avoid another emotional talk.
âI know thatâs not what I was going to ask you,â Christopher sighed, âLorelai, youâre engaged to Luke, I know youâre in love with him, so why am I here instead of him?â
Lorelai stopped walking and was silent for a moment; she didnât think Christopher would question her motives, âSo you donât want to be here. You could have said something,â she snapped.
âNo, itâs not that,â he assured, âbut itâs a strange choice, Lor. You didnât call him to the hospital; you donât want him involved in the arrangements. Iâm just curious as to why.â
Lorelai was quiet again, she couldnât tell the truth, that she couldnât cry in front of him, âBecause youâre Roryâs father, you knew Mom and Dad, weâve got history.â
âOkay,â Chris replied, âgood enough.â
Back in Stars Hollow, on their favorite bridge, Rory waited for Jess. She knew heâd ask he the question sheâd been expecting, why him?
Rory heard footsteps approach the bridge and turned to offer Jess a greeting, âWhat are you doing here?â she asked when instead of seeing Jess, as she expected, she saw Dean.
âI saw you come out this way, Luke, wouldnât let me talk to you on the phone,â he explained, âWhy didnât you call me?â
âBecause she called me,â Jess replied, arriving at the bridge with two bags from Lukeâs.
âRory?â Deanâs tone held a lot of questions.
âLook,â Jess said a bit defensively, âRory called me because she chose to call me. Why she did that is her business, not ours. Sheâs been through a difficult time and you and I doing our usual chest pounding macho man routine isnât going to help her, so letâs act like two adults and let this end properly.â
âSure,â Dean replied closing the space between Jess and himself, âget lost. Go back to New York or California, leave Rory to me.â
Jess stepped back from Dean and looked at Rory who now sat on the bridge crying. Jess ignored Dean and knelt beside Rory, âIâm sorry, Rory. Here, eat your burger, calm down, and Iâll finish this.â
âOkay,â Jess said to Dean, âNow your presence is upsetting Rory. Sheâs all ready upset enough so you need to leave now.â
âI want to hear that from her,â Dean pointed at Rory.
Rory jumped from her perch on the bridge, âHow dense are you? Did you hear Jess? I called him; I want to talk to him. Go home, Dean. Go back to Lindsey, leave me alone!â Rory grew quiet after that outburst and sat down on the bridge, taking a huge bite of her burger.
âYou heard it from her,â Jess said and quietly, âThank you for your concern. See you,â Jess sat down next to Rory then and began sharing her French fries ignoring Deanâs presence and exit.
âLuke, Rory, Iâm home,â Lorelai called once Christopher dropped her off in front of the house.
âIâm in here,â Luke called from the kitchen, âRoryâs out with Jess.â
Lorelai followed Lukeâs voice to the kitchen, âHey,â she whispered, leaning up to give him a kiss, âWhat are you making?â
âPecan pie,â Luke replied, âand your favorite butter pecan ice cream.â
âOkay,â Lorelai sighed, âand this is without begging, what did I do to deserve that?â
Luke leaned over and kissed her lips lightly, âYouâve been you.â
âCall me when that pieâs ready Iâm going to go and see what I have that is suitable for a funeral,â Lorelai said quickly on her way up to the bedroom.
Luke leaned over and checked the pie, âAlmost done,â he said to himself then he heard Lorelai running down the steps, âLuke! Luke!â she called her voice nearly frantic.
Luke was out to the living room in a flash, âLorelai, what is it? Whatâs wrong?â he asked, wondering if the melt down he knew was coming had finally come.
âI have one black suit,â she told him, holding the outfit, tears beginning to swim in her blue eyes. âI have to go through two days of wakes and one long funeral, and I only have one black suit. And thatâs a summer suit and itâs October and Iâll be freezing and shivering and that is so not properâ¦â
Luke gently took Lorelai by the arms, âWhoa, calm down, Lor. You have plenty of grey suits and a nice navy blue skirt that I love, by the way, you can wear those things.â
âNo,â she shook her head, âI have to wear black suits. My mother will come back and haunt me if I wear anything other than a stylish black suit to her wake and funeral, and I really donât want my mother haunting me for all eternity!â Lorelaiâs rant finally ended.
âOkay, so,â Luke thought for a moment, âWhy donât you and I, while the pieâs cooling and the ice cream is freezing, hit the mall and find some seasonal, tasteful, stylish, black outfits.â
Lorelai listened to Lukeâsâ calm voice, his sensible suggestion, and stomped her foot on the floor, âWhy are you doing this?â
âDoing what?â Luke asked, confused.
âBaking me pies, making me ice cream, giving me coffee, offering to take me shopping, why are you being so nice to me? You are never nice to me,â Lorelai ranted at Luke.
Lukeâs jaw dropped and his blue eyes grew bright. Those words hurt him to the very core. He understood Lorelaiâs armor was up but that was just too much, âLorelai, I get that you are upset, but how can you say Iâm never nice to you? Am I that horrible to you? Just because I donât give you coffee without arguing sometimes, and I get on you about eating junk food, does that make me that bad a person? I donât want you to make yourself sick with that stuff, but I know you love it. And today, Iâm trying to do something that you love or even like, because I know how upset you are about losing your parents. You donât want to show it to me or admit it to me, you donât even want to admit it to yourself, but I know youâre hurt and I want to make it better. This is the only way I know how to make it better!â
âYou canât make it better, Luke! You canât make it better! There is nothing to fix, there is nothing that you can do to change whatâs happened. Iâd appreciate it if you were just sour surly Luke, who rolls his eyes at my coffee addiction and makes me beg for my burger and fries. This nice act is really not making it any easier,â Lorelai told him.
Luke nodded, âOkay, but I all ready made the pie and the mall offerâ¦soâ¦â
âOkay, when the pieâs done, weâll go look for black suits and you can bug me about how much everything costs,â Lorelai agreed.
Luke smiled and kissed her cheek quickly, âGood deal.â
Back at the bridge, Rory and Jess were finishing up their burgers. Jess was ill at ease and Rory could tell he had something he wanted to say to her, âSo spill it,â she said, âWhatâs on your mind?â
âWhat makes you think there is anything on my mind?â Jess asked, toying with his zipper.
âBecause you are playing with your clothing and you are not the clothing player type, so whatâs bugging you?â Rory asked.
âNothing really, Rory, itâs justâ¦Iâm going to get kind of mushy here for a minute, document this moment, it does not come around very often, butâ¦â Jess sighed, âBut I just wanted to say, Iâm glad that you can, that you thought you could call me, that you knew I was telling the truth last summer when I told you could count on me now. Iâm so glad that you want me to be here for you, Iâm just sorry that it took something like this for you to realize it.â Jess studied the pond.
Rory reached out her hand and lifted Jessâ chin, gently turning his neck so that their eyes met, âJess, this is the hardest thing Iâve ever done, and there is no one Iâd rather have at my side then you. Iâm just sorry we lost so much time. I wantâ¦I want us to start over, to start newâ¦but I want us to do it in Stars Hollow. Thatâs what freaked me out last May, not leaving with you, it was leaving,â she explained.
âRory, I bailed on you, twice,â Jess confessed, âbut I never stopped lovâ¦â
Jess didnât get a chance to finish his sentence. Roryâs lips were on his, gently parting them with her tongue. It was a reunion for them. Theyâd been rejoined by the tragedies in Roryâs life, but they were never reunited until this kiss.
âWow,â Jess gasped, âYou really learned a few things from me, huh?â
âI am a quicker learner,â Rory quipped, leaning her head against Jessâ shoulder, âJess?â
âHuh?â he answered.
âIt hurts, you know?â she told him on a sigh.
Jess lifted his arm and cradled her head next to his chest, âI know it does. You loved your grandparents and they are gone now. But Iâm here, and Iâll always be here. I promise you that. I love you, Rory.â
Rory rubbed her cheek against Jessâ shirt and whispered, âI love you too.â
They sat there a moment, holding each other, listening to the breeze, then Rory spoke again, âJess?â
âYes, Rory,â he replied.
âCome with me, to the funerals?â she requested not looking at him, just holding on to him.
âOf course, I will, Rory,â he replied dropping a kiss on her head, âYou didnât even need to ask.â

âYeah, I heard you, but I couldnâtâ¦Lorelai, put the mug down and listen to me, then Iâll go,â Luke told her, âI know what youâre doing.â
âLuke,â she groaned but he continued, âLorelai, you are so strong, you are always so in control and together, with your best foot forward, and I admire that.
