LOS ANGELES (AP) - Canadian singer Avril Lavigne is reportedly marrying a fellow songsmith.
Us Weekly says the 20-year-old is engaged to marry Deryck Whibley, the frontman for the punk-pop group Sum 41.
Lavigne, 20, began dating the 25-year-old musician in early 2004. They had been friends for several years before that, the magazine said.
Whibley and Lavigne both hail from the same province in Canada - Ontario - and reportedly bought a home together in Los Angeles last year.
Us Weekly reported that Whibley proposed over the weekend while Lavigne was finishing up the European leg of her tour. Publicists for both musicians confirmed the engagement to the magazine.

Whibley had previously dated Paris Hilton, 24, but he and Lavigne, who hail from the same Canadian province (he outside of Toronto, she from Napanee, Ontario), had been platonic friends for several years before commencing a romantic relationship. In late 2004, the two had reportedly purchased a home together in Los Angeles' Bel-Air neighborhood. In May of this year, Lavigne told Us Weekly, 'I hope to make a few more records, get married and have a couple of kids.' When asked where she would raise her offspring, Lavigne replied, 'Canada.' A source tells Us that the pair's friends and family are 'ecstatic' over the news and anxiously await her return to North America next week 'so we can celebrate properly.'
