Sometimes the best you can say for a season finale is that it brings a bad season to a close. Nonetheless, Tuesday's Gilmore Girls (WB, 8 ET/PT) will be crucial to loyal viewers, who have been worried for weeks over where the relationship between Lorelai and Luke is headed. What's more, it's likely to be the last episode written by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is leaving the show.
Sad to say, she's leaving Gilmore in such horrid shape, you wonder whether her departure might not be for the best. Not a single story works tonight as the episode lurches between forced attempts at humor and dramatic scenes that are lugubrious when not ridiculous. As for filling the town with famous "troubadours," including Sonic Youth and Mary Lynn Rajskub, that's Gilmore at its most achingly precious.
So why bring the show back at all? Two words: Lauren Graham. We always knew Graham could shine with great material. This season, we saw how she could salvage the show when the material was awful. Each week, the scripts seemed to find a new way to make Lorelai seem weak, foolish and pathetic, and yet Graham was still able to maintain some rooting interest in the character. She, her fans and her character deserve a better ending than they've been given tonight.
