Part XI:
Luke quickly tried to whip away his tears. After a few moments, it knocked again. Outside the door stood Lorelai.
As they couldn’t see anymore, what was going on in the diner, she, Rory and Dean decided to go in there and wait together with Patty and Babette. But Lorelai couldn’t stand it anymore. They have been waiting for one and half an hour. The tape just had a duration of 35 minutes. Then suddenly Lorelai stood up and without a word, went upstairs. But she didn’t knock immediately. First she had to collect herself. Then she knocked. Carefully. No answer. She waited. She knocked again. Finally she could hear noises from inside. A few moments later, the door opened.
Luke stopped breathing, as she saw Lorelai standing there. He didn’t know what to say. So he just made a step back, to let her know, that she could come in.
Lorelai stepped inside. Immediately, she saw the still running TV. But there was just the test-screen.
"He watched it ‘till the end, then", Lorelai thought, not knowing why she wasn’t more relieved.
Then she looked at Luke. He seemed smaller to her. She searched for his eyes, but he didn’t look at her directly. It seemed like he was focused on a point right above Lorelai’s head.
Both of them stood still. Neither said one single word.
Finally Luke opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again.
"Lorelai." He hesitated.
"Can I say this? It will hurt her... and me."
He started over again.
"Lorelai, I can’t..", he broke off.
Lorelai made a step forward.
"I need to stop him, saying anything with ‘I can’t’ in it.", she thought, more and more desperate.
"Shh..", she said, again stepping forward.
But Luke made a step backwards. He stumbled, but fortunately, he just fell into his armchair. Inevitable, he had to smile.
"Now I’m sitting here like a jerk, unable to go anywhere.", he thought.
For the first time now, he looked directly at her. She looked exhausted. Pale. Just like on the tape. Now he searched for a sign in her eyes. They took his breath away. He often had looked into those heavenly blue eyes, but as he did now, they were brighter. They seemed to shine somehow. Luke recognized it. It was hope, but at the same time fear. It confused him. So he just sat there, staring at her.
Lorelai, still standing were she was, too, stared into Luke’s eyes. They were red. As though he had cried. Lorelai didn’t remember ever seeing him cry. It was novum.
At this moment, Luke tried again to say something.
"Lorelai", he began, "This tape...it was...but I...but I can’t do..".
Lorelai interrupted him.
"Luke. Please don’t say ‘I can’t.’ Because you do."
A tear made its way down her face.
"Just listen to me now... If there’s a ‘No’, I won’t be mad, just disappointed, okay? Will you?"
Luke remembered those words. It were his. Luke again tried to say something but the words just didn’t came out of his mouth. So he simply nodded. "Yes."
Lorelai caught up for air. Then she slowly began to speak. Very slow.
"Luke, did you remember?"
Luke, again nodded.
"Everything on this tape is true. I don’t know what I would do without you. You’re like the air that I breathe. I can imagine, what you think right now, that I’m crazy, expecting that you would say ‘Everything’s fine. I wanna be with you.’ See, I don’t think you would, but all I know is, you’re the one for me."
Luke stood up.
"No, Lorelai. I’m not the one, I’m sorry...", he breathed hard, his voice cracking.
"Don’t speak further, Luke. Just listen to me one more minute, okay? When you say ‘Go!’. Then I’m gone. I promise."
Like in trance, Luke nodded again.
"What do I have to expect?", he thought. He sat down. Again looking closely at a point right above Lorelai’s head.
"Luke, if you’re not the one, then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one, then why I’m crying on my bed?
If you’re not the one, then why does your name resound in my head?
If you are not mine, then why does your heart return my call?
If you are not for me, then why does this distance maim my life?
If you are not for me, then why do I dream of you as my husband?
If you are not mine, would I have the strength to stand at all?"
Tears were streaming down her face now. She looked into Luke’s eyes. They were shimmering. Then she could see a tear rolling down.
"I know, it’s a hard one, I mean with the baby and stuff. I know that Luke. And I know why you’re so far away. But I also know, that this much is true. We’ll make through, Luke. And I hope you are the one, I share my life with. And I wish that you could be one, I die with. And I’m praying you’re the one, I build my home with. And if I’m not made for you, then why does my heart tell me, that I am? Is there any way, that I can be in your arms?"
Luke stood up. Tears were dropping from his nose, his lips. He made a step forward.
"Lorelai..."
"Wait, one little thing", Lorelai quickly said, but nevertheless stepping closer to Luke.
"I hope I love you all my life."
Another step. Now they were like one yard away from each other. Lorelai could see every single tear, rolling down Luke’s face.
He made a step forward, too. Then he took both of her hands.
"Lorelai", his voice was rough, quiet. Barely hearable. But Lorelai couldn’t imagine a more wonderful sound.
"Lorelai. Nobody ever did something this... this amazing for me before. But now, you’re the one, who has to remember. Remember... 2 months ago. I said that it may seem weird, because we never even dated. Remember?"
Now Lorelai was the one, who just nodded.
"What I wanted to say, way back then – and what I want to say now, too, is...".
He took a pause. He made another step forward. Their noses nearly touched. He directly looked into her eyes.
"In those heavenly blue eyes..."
Luke cleared his throat.
"Is, that I love you, Lorelai. I mean, I thought, I had lost you. I mean, you’re pregnant. But Rory opened my eyes. I feel like her father. I would do everything for her, she’s right. I love her, too. And the baby...I can love it, too. I mean, I already do. Lorelai, in my heart is there you are.... What you said before, every single word is true. I love you. I..."
Lorelai interrupted him. "Shh..."
"Wha...", Luke wanted to say. But he had no chance.
Lorelai leaned forward and kissed him.
----
Meanwhile at the Gilmore house. The phone war ringing. The answering machine sprang to life.
"It’s us. Speak, if you must. Peep."
"Hi, it’s Chris... Uhm, I just wanted to say, that I still think that The Offspring rules, but Metallica is okay, too. Alright, that’s it. Bye."
----
Finally they broke apart. Luke whiped away Lorelai’s tears.
"Don’t cry. This is gonna work. I know of that", he smiled and kissed her again.
"I’m sorry, Luke, but could we go downstairs? Just for a minute? Four very important persons in my life are sitting there, waiting for a sign...", Lorelai put forward.
"Okay. Let’s go. I mean, they’re important for me, too, then."
With these words, he kissed her again, took her hands and together they went down the stairs, and walked through the curtain, which separated Luke’s private from his business life.
Patty, Babette, Dean and Rory were sitting at the very same table, where Lorelai had left them.
As Rory saw the two of them coming down, smiling like that, she immediately sprang up.
"Everything’s fine?", she asked, already knowing the answer. She was beaming.
"Yeah."
First Rory hugged her mom, then Luke.
Luke hugged her, smiling. Then he said.
"Yeah, everything’s fine. No, it’s great... fantastic. I thought, I would never gonna be able to tell, Rory, but I love your mom."
He leaned forward and again kissed his great love.
Love,
Cedric
