Chapter 4: The Ark
She was drowning, she was wet and she knew this was the end. Through the masses of water which surrounded her she heard Lukeâs words in a daze, couldnât register them, could barely understand them.
When they reached her ear they sounded strange and blurred.
She sat on the chair in the diner and was sure that she was drowning. She was gasping for air and started to look around the room in panic.
Then, after endless hours, at least thatâs what those few minutes were to her, she took a deep breath and came back into reality.
Slowly her surroundings became clear again in front of her eyes. She could see the diner in all itâs pale green color and the yellow glow of the lamps.
This place really needs a spruce, she thought while she was looking around, her eyes drifting to the corners of the diner.
Suddenly her eyes popped open when she heard a sound upstairs and the things Luke said came back to her. âWe are getting married on Friday. I wonât wear a tuxâ. That sentence was so typically Luke, at least the second one. The first sentence, though⦠married on Friday. Why did he want to get married on Friday? Why did everyone suddenly wanted to marry her or marry her off? Were they all nuts?
Married on Fridayâ¦. And then it really hit her.
She jumped out of her chair, took only three steps to reach the curtain, passed it and then hurried up the stairs.
She didnâ bother knocking, she just snatched the door open, walked in and slammed it shut behind her.
Like a person possessed she looked around the room and found him standing on the opposite side of the room in front of the window, his hands were gripping the window- sill so tight that his knuckles turned white and Lorelai could see that he was visibly shaking .
âItâs you?â Lorelai yelled at him and grabbed his arm to turn him around. She wasnât interested that he was obviously upset. All her anger and despondency was directed against Luke now, who was standing there facing her and for the first time seemed small.
âYou are the guy I am forced to get married to? What have you, some kind of sick deal with my parents to get me? You never even asked me out on a date and now we have to get married? What kind of sick pervert are you? And where the hell do you know my parents from? Ooooh, now I get it! It wasnât our idea, but you let them pay you for that. How much did they give you? Or will you get the money after the licence is signed? How could you?â she screamed, her face red with anger and tears appeared in her eyes.
âThis is for Rory Luke, for Rory! How could you use the future of my kid?â her voice was hoarse now and furiously she wiped the tears away.
âI donât want to marry you! Actually I donât know how I will stand you twenty- four seven. Your annoying babbling, the constant smell of coffee and stupid references all the time, which no-one ever gets! Your ugly pink purses and the inappropriate clothing, along with a purring, mewing or squeaking alarm clock. Oh and donât forget the sexy clogged sinks because you never pull your hair out â Luke yelled back. He was hurt that she was thinking he would trick her in such a mean way.
But then he saw the tears in her eyes and on her cheeks and took a deep breath.
âIâm sorry. I guess I am just as shocked as you areâ, he apologized and sat down on his couch. He leaned back and lay his head back against the couch and rubbed with his hands over his face, closed his eyes for some seconds.
âLook, I think we are both still too shocked about this whole thing. Why donât we calm down, meet tomorrow evening and then discuss what we are going to do and how we can get out of this without any consequences for Rory?â he asked then and turned around to face her; she was still standing in the same place.
âOkayâ, Lorelai just nodded and walked to the apartment-door without looking at him. She opened the door and made a step over the thresh-hold when she stopped.
âIâm sorry Lukeâ she said quietly and didnât wait for his reply before she closed the door.

The next morning when Lorelai entered the Inn Michel gave her a disapproving, nearly hostile glance.
âI was instructed to tell you that Sookie is waiting for you in the kitchen. And that work is waiting for you- that was my own additionâ, he snorted and walked away.
"Tell me when Rory gets here", she called after him, shook her head and walked into the kitchen where she surely would find her friend.
âHey, Sookie, what did you want to talkâ¦â she started, but couldnât get farther before Sookie embraced her in a bear-hug. âOh my!â she exclaimed.
âI'm so happy!â Sookie squealed and bounced up and down, still hugging Lorelai.
âI'm so glad you're so happy! Is this is a normal happy or was there cooking sherry involved?â Lorelai replied and succeeded to get out of the hug.
âIt is so wonderful. Do you know how wonderful it is?â Sookie said, still in that squeaking tone that made Lorelaiâs ears ring.
âNo, no, I don't, but I would love to weigh inâ, she said and felt how her own mood lightened when she saw her friend so happy.
âYou're getting married to Lukeâ, Sookie smiled and clapped her hands excitedly.
âAh, how did you know?â Lorelai asked stunned and her good mood was gone again.
âI was out of onions last night and wanted to make stew. Doseyâs was already closed, so I thought I could stop by at Lukeâs and get an onion from Luke. I would even have paid for it, although itâs not from France. You know French onions have that certain spice which other onions donât have. Itâs a mixture of lemon and...â
âSookie!â Lorelai called her back into reality. Sookie stopped and looked at her friend.
âWhere was I?â, she asked then.
âYou needed an onion and wanted to get it from Lukeâ Lorelai told her.
âRight. So I went over to Lukeâs and he was walking up to you and told you that you would get married on Friday and that he wouldnât wear a tux. That is so great!â Sookie said and started bouncing again.
âWell, Sookie, Iâ, Lorelai started to explain.
âI am so glad! You two are perfect for each other. I have always thought that someday, if you just sort of turned around and opened your eyes that you'd see it, and now that you have, I'm just so damn happyâ, Sookie smiled brightly.
âSookieâ¦â Lorelai tried to say something.
âYou're not gonna die alone. I mean, somebody will be there. Somebody will know. Somebody will find the body and call the police andâ¦â Sookie went on, but this time Lorelai really stopped her.
âSookie, we wonât get marriedâ, Lorelai told her then.
âWhy?â
âBecause obviously he is the man my parents want me to marry. I donât know yet what they did and where they know each other from, but we wonât get marriedâ. Lorelai shook her head.
âI donât see the problemâ, Sookie shrugged.
âHuh?â
âIf you marry Luke everything could stay the same. He is your friend and he has a thing for you. He is there whenever you need him and he repairs your house when it needs fixing. He feeds you and gives you coffee. And I bet he is good in the sack as wellâ Sookie grinned devily.
âSookie!â
âWhat? Iâm just stating the facts. I just donât get it. You were upset because you should marry a stranger. Now it turns out itâs Luke and thatâs a good thing. Besides, I donât think that Luke has anything to do with that planâ.
âI know. I mean, I yelled at him and accused him, but I didnât mean itâ Lorelai admitted and had a bad conscience about that.
âBut he knows right?â Sookie asked.
âHe knows. I think he knows. He should know. I hope he knowsâ, Lorelai said.
âWell make sure he knows, okay? Because you two together could really find a good solutionâ, Sookie said and then went back to her sauce and left Lorelai alone with her thoughts, but then suddenly started to squeak again.
âSookie, please, I am begging you, pull yourself together, okay? I got no sleep last night and I think I put my contacts in backwardsâ, Lorelai said and started to rub her temples.
âRory's still mad at you, huh?â Sookie changed the topic, aware that the wedding-topic was done for now.
âHey, I'm not so crazy about her eitherâ, Lorelai replied.
âIt was a fight. Mothers and daughters fight,â Sookie tried to calm her.
âNo, we don't fight. We never fightâ, Lorelai shook her head when Michel entered the kitchen.
âYou told me to tell you when your daughter arrived. Well, she's here and she's sitting in my chairâ, he said. Lorelai gave Sookie a defeated wave and walked out to the lobby.
âHey, no muumuu today. You know what's weird, I kind of miss itâ, she said.
âYou left me a note to meet you hereâ, Rory replied aggressively.
âYeah, I thought you might want to work a couple hours, make a little extra cashâ
âFineâ, she shrugged.
âAw, you're not gonna give me the "Mommy Dearest" treatment forever, are ya?â Lorelai tried it again.
âYou wanted me here, I'm here. Should I do something or what?â Rory grumbled. Lorelaiâs shoulders slumped and she wasnât able to keep her composure anymore. This whole thing was getting unbearable. Rory noticed the change in her mothers demeanor and got worried. She sensed that something was really worrying her, which had to be bigger than their fight.
âMom?â She asked worried
âI'm okay. I just. . .do I look shorter? 'Cause I feel shorterâ, Lorelai smiled slightly, soothed by her daughterâs worry for her.
âHey, how 'bout I get you a cup of coffee?â Rory asked her and slung her arm around her motherâs waist to lead her to the kitchen. They both needed some cheering up.
Lorelai was only too happy to got back into the kitchen again and get some coffee. The room where Sookie was suddenly seemed like the Ark, which had saved her from the flood. At least until she had to face Luke again.
