Chapter 9: Angel
âLorelai? Lorelai!â, Luke said and tapped her shoulder to wake her up.
âMmmhâ¦. Let me sleepâ, she muttered and buried her face in his shoulder. She was still hugging his arm, which had gone completely numb during the night and she surely didnât want to get up now, because she was so comfortable.
âLorelai you have to get upâ, he tried again and pulled his arm out from under her. Lorelai groaned, and with still closed eyes, she moved a bit and laid her head on Lukeâs shoulder, squished a bit around to get more comfortable.
âItâs a quarter to six and you have to get up. Itâs Roryâs first day at Chiltonâ, he informed her and sat up, so that her head dropped from his shoulder onto the pillows. When she still didnât react he got out of bed and pulled her comforter off of her.
âNoooo, itâs cold! I wanna sleep, you jerkâ, she said but finally opened her eyes.
âArenât you charming in the morning, sunshineâ, Luke said sarcastically and opened his side of the closet to his clothes out. âIâm gonna take a quick shower so the bathroom will be free afterwards for you to get ready. And be up when I come out, otherwise no coffee for you. And donât forget to wake Roryâ, he told her.
âBut the alarm-clock hasnât purred yet. Why didnât it purr yet?â she protested.
âAlarm-clocks donât purr, they ringâ, he rolled his eyes.
âItâs furry it purrsâ, she mumbled in response.
âThere you have your answer and now get up!â
âSadistâ, she muttered when he walked out of the door.
âI heard thatâ, he yelled back and she rolled her eyes, but then got out of bed with another groan.
~*~
âOh my god, oh my godâ, Lorelai muttered when Luke came out of the bathroom. The content of her closet was thrown all over the room and she searched now through his side.
âHey, what do you think youâre doing?â he said when he saw her throwing out his socks and boxers.
âI donât have any clean clothesâ, she informed him.
âWell I doubt you will find some between my underwearâ, he remarked while he rubbed his hair try with a towel.
âBut I need something to wear! Rory will be known for the rest of her time at Chilton as âthe girl whose mother showed up naked or in her pyjamasââ, she said and her voice reached a hysterical high.
âAnd whatâs this?â Luke asked her and picked up something which hung on the side of the closet.
âThatâs my blue suit with the flippy skirt. But thatâs still at the dry-cleaners, I forgot to pick it upâ, she said and her mouth hung open.
âWell, I figured you would forget it, although you mentioned it a hundred times yesterday and so I went there and picked it up when I got the last boxes from my apartmentâ, he informed her and handed her the suit. Slowly a huge smile formed on Lorelaiâs face nd before she knew what she was doing she pecked him lightly on the lips.
âAngel! Youâve got wings babyâ, she smiled and then hurried into the bathroom to get ready, leaving a stunned Luke behind.
~*~
âMom, your up alreadyâ, Rory said when she came out of her room half an hour later and found her mother in the kitchen with a mug of coffee in front of her and a plate of pancakes, scrambled-eggs and bacon on the table.
âWhat? You though I would sleep in?â Lorelai asked and faked a shocked expression.
âWell, youâre purring friend up there isnât the most reliable thing and you slept in quiet a few times since you got itâ.
âBut itâs pretty! And my flannel- clad friend up there seems to be reliableâ, Lorelai smiled like the cat who got the cream.
âSomehow I think that smile screams for a âdirtyââ, Rory said and got herself another mug and poured coffee into it.
âOh no, get your mind out of the gutter. How should I know if heâs reliable in THAT way when he only slept here one nightâ, Lorelai protested.
âOh gross mom. So nothing happened?â Rory wanted to know.
âNothing happened. Just two old friends sleeping in one bed. Absolutely innocentâ, Lorelai said, the smile back on her face.
âThen why are you grinning like that?â
âI donât know.. Itâs just a nice morning. Beside the fact that itâs your first day at Chilton, Luke woke me up and he got my suit from the dry- cleaners. When I came down after my shower coffee and breakfast was ready. Itâs just⦠niceâ, she explained.
âSomehow that sounded more like your personal butler moved in and not your future husbandâ, Rory said and grabbed one of the pancakes and some eggs.
âHuhâ, Lorelai only said and the smile vanished.
âI think we have to pay attention that this wonât happen. We should do something nice for him because he does all this for us,â Rory went on.
âTrue, but we have to get going now otherwise youâll be lateâ, Lorelai agreed and got up.
âBy the way: Where is Luke?â Rory asked.
âIn the diner. He left after he made us breakfastâ. They grabbed their bag and purse and then walked outside to get into the jeep. Lorelai turned the key, but the jeep didnât start.
.
âOh no! Tell me thatâs not trueâ, Lorel said and tried again and again to get the jeep to start.
âMom! What are we gonna do! Iâm going to be late! And then Iâll be the girl who was late on her first day. I canât be late on my first dayâ, Rory panicked.
âOk, come on!â Lorelai suddenly said and got out of the car and slammed the door shut.
âMom, where are you going?â Rory screeched.
âHurry! Weâre gonna be lateâ, Lorelai said and started to run.
âWhat? Are we gonna run there?â Rory yelled, but followed her mother.
Out of breath they reached the diner in a few minutes and burst through the door.
âLuke we need your carâ, Lorelai pressed out and steadied herself be grabbing his arm, which held the coffee-pot .
âNoâ, Luke said firmly and shook his head.
âBut Iâm gonna be lateâ, Rory yammered.
âTell me whatâs going on hereâ, he turned to Lorelai.
âThe jeep wonât start and weâre gonna be lateâ, she gasped.
âDo you know how to drive a stick?â
âNoâ
âThen I drive you, letâs goâ, he said.
âOkay, everyone out, the diner is closed!â he announced and handed Patty the keys.
âLock up when they are goneâ, he just said and then followed Lorelai and Rory outside, where they were impatiently waiting at his truck.
~*~
âLuke thank you, thank you, thank youâ Rory said and hugged Luke briefly when they arrived at Chilton.
âNo big dealâ, he shrugged and blushed when Rory hugged him.
âWow, I remember it being smallerâ, Rory said when she pulled back from the hug and looked at the school building.
âYeah and lessâ¦â Lorelai started.
âOff with their heads?â Luke shrugged.
âYeahâ, both Lorelai and Rory nodded.
âSo where do we go?â Lorelai asked when she snapped out of the daze.
âUh, the Ambroise buildingâ, Rory answered.
âWhich is?â
âThe big, scary oneâ, Rory said.
âOh great, that helpsâ, Luke grumped.
âYouâre coming with us?â Rory asked him.
âNah, Iâm gonna wait in the carâ, he said and pointed with his thumb back to the truck.
âOh Luke, come with us.Donât you want to know where your future step-daughter is going to school?â Lorelai teased him with a shocked expression.
âYes, daddy, donât leave me aloneâ, Rory played along and hugged Lukeâs arm.
âI should have let you walk hereâ, he muttered, but didnât resist when they lead him into the school.
~*~
When they had finally reached the office after a long time of looking around, they entered after a knock. The secretary looked up, but didnât say a word.
âOh! How. . .wow, hi. I'm Lorelai Gilmore. This is my daughter, Lorelai Gilmore. . .'cause I named her after me. I was in the hospital all whacked out on Demerol. Never mind. Um, but we call her Rory. It's short for Lorelai, but she'll answer to either one, or even 'Hey, you' depending on the. . . Uh, is the headmaster here?â Lorelai stuttered the last words, after Luke had nudged her.
âOne momentâ was everything the secretary said before she walked through a door behind them. âHeadmaster Charleston will see you nowâ, she said when she came back out.
âGreat. Great Thanksâ, Lorelai stuttered and grasped Lukeâs arm because suddenly she was incredibly nervous. She felt like it was her first day at Chilton and not Roryâs.
âMs. Gilmore. Iâm Headmaster Charleston. And Mrâ¦.â, the elder man behind the desk said and got up to welcome them.
âDanesâ, Luke said and shook the hand of the headmaster as well.
âHi. Wow, itâs really nice to meet you...â Lorelai started, but stopped when she saw her mother sitting on the couch. âUhm excuse me⦠mom, what are you doing here?â she asked surprised.
âI came to wish my granddaughter luck on her first day of schoolâ, Emily shrugged and got up.
âButâ¦â Lorelai started, but her mother didnât listen to her anymore.
âLuke, nice to see you her as wellâ, she said and shook hands with him.
âMomâ Lorelai tried again, but this time Emily turned to Rory.
âRory, you look wonderful in that uniformâ, she complimented.
Thank you grandmaâ, Rory muttered.
âWell, would you like to take off your coat and have a seat?â headmaster Charleston said then and pointed to the chairs. While Lorelai and Rory sat down and took off their coats, Luke kept his coat on, knowing that underneath he still wore the grease-stained flannel from the diner.
âOh no, Iâm fineâ, he said when the headmaster and Emily eyed him suspiciously.
âI'm afraid they were a little overzealous with the furnace this morning. It's quite warm in hereâ, the headmaster said.
âI like it warmâ, Luke shrugged, but already blushed in embarrassment.
âLuke, take off your coat and sit down. You don't want Hanlin to think you're rudeâ, Emily interjected and with a defeated sigh Luke opened his jacket and sat down on the chair.
âI didnât⦠I wasnât⦠the diner⦠and then the carâ, he stuttered and was glad when Emily interrupted him.
âHanlin, did you know that Rory has a 4.0 grade average?â, she turned the attention to Rory and Luke slumped back in his chair, relieved that the focus was off of him.
As soon as they left the office though Emily started. âHow could you show up here looking like that? â she asked him and pointed to the stains on his shirt.
âIt was not planned that I come here, believe meâ, he sighed and put on his green coat again.
âAnd on Rory's first day of school. What kind of an impression did you think you were gonna make?â Emily went on.
âWhat are you doing here, Mother?â, Lorelai sighed and interrupted Emilyâs attack to Luke.
âI told you, I came to put in a good word for Roryâ
âWell, she didn't need a good wordâ, Lorelai argued back.
âI'm not allowed here, is that it?â Emily asked and raised her voice.
âShe didnât say thatâ, Luke said, but went quiet when Emily shot him a look.
âI'm allowed to pay for it, but I can't actually set foot on the premises. I just want to get the rules straightâ, Emily went on.
âOh boyâ, Luke muttered and this time Lorelai glared at him.
âHow about the street? Can I drive down the street?â Emil asked.
âForget itâ, Lorelai sighed and turned to leave.
âMaybe I should just avoid this neighborhood altogether, though my doctor's just down the block. Maybe I can get special permission if I'm bleeding from the headâ, Emil wasnât finished yet.
âI'm sorry. I was just surprised to see you hereâ, Lorelai said and kept walking to the exit, Luke following them.
âI just thought it was important for this school to know they had a Gilmore amongst themâ.
âA very good thoughtâ, Lorelai replied sarcastically.
âAnd that the Gilmores actually own clothingâ, Emily said and was surprised when Lorelai stopped abruptly and whirled around to face her.
âThat was a low-blow mom! We dragged Luke out of the diner because my car wouldnât start and he had to drive us here. He never intended to come with us in the first place, but we wanted him with us. So stop attacking him! You should thank him, because otherwise we would have never made it on timeâ, Lorelai yelled at her.
âAnd on that note, I have to get back to the diner. I'll see you laterâ, Luke said angrily to Emily and walked to his truck, Lorelai following him.
âDinner, Friday night. No stains, pleaseâ, Emily yelled after them and made them both groan in annoyance before they got into the truck and drove off.
âYouâre gonna come back with me and pick her up?â Lorelai asked during the drive.
âWeâll have your jeep fixed, probably itâs only the batterieâ, he said.
âSo youâre not coming back with me to pick her up?â Lorelai asked again.
âNo wayâ, he shook his head.
âCan I have coffee when we get back? Extra strong? Or in an I.V.?â she asked.
âI can give you tea and a balance barâ, he said.
âPlease, please, please, tell me youâre kiddingâ, she said and pouted. One could never know.
âIâm kiddingâ, he nodded.
âYouâre sickâ, she said and swatted his arm, while he never took his eyes from the road.
âYupâ, he nodded again, and felt his spirits lift ever so slightly because of the banter with her.
âYouâre a sadist, youâre a fiend!â, she went on.
âExtra strong and to go?â he asked and looked at her for the first time since they had started the drive back. A small smile played around the corners of his mouth.
âYouâre prettyâ, Lorelai sighed, then giggled, her bad mood due to Emily Gilmore, somehow gone.
