Chapter 3
âLuke, I could teach Sam how to swimâ, Kirk informed him while they walked to the pool, after their stop at the toilets.
âHe is two years old, Kirkâ Luke replied.
âYou can never start early enough. I could show you stats about the swim-training of babies. Itâs a shame you never took him to one of my baby-swim classesâ, Kirk mourned.
âThatâs because itâs your swim-classesâ, Luke muttered.
âLuke can I go over to the really deep water?â Davey asked and interrupted Kirk who had just opened his mouth to reply.
âNo, you better stay here where I can see ya. I can stand here, you canât so you can swim around hereâ, Luke told him and got slowly into the water with Sam on his arm, who squeaked excitedly.
âBut I can swimâ, Davey insisted.
âI know you can, but your mother will kill me with one of her knives, or all of them for that matter, if you would drown over there while I am all the way over here. So the kids pool with your sisters or the lower side in here. Choseâ, Luke replied through clenched teeth because the water was so cold.
âAw manâ, the boy muttered, but then jumped into the pool.
âYoung man it is prohibited to jump into the pool from the sideâ, Taylor suddenly appeared out of nowhere to lecture Davey.
âLeave the boy alone, Taylorâ, Luke said immediately.
âIf he jumps on a swimming person thenâ¦â the town-selectman started.
âThey are all way over thereâ, Luke said and pointed to the deeper side of the pool. âThe only one here are Sam and me, so leave us alone, before you will be in here with or without the vest for what I careâ.
Taylor gasped, but then marched off without another word.
âSâut up Taylorâ, Sam giggled again and started to splash into the water with his arms.

âSooo, you got Luke to come to the pool with youâ, Sookie said and wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.
âNot really, he just suddenly showed up, I had not nothing to do with itâ , Lorelai replied, but her smile gave her away.
âUhuh, come on. Tell me, what did you do?â Sookie tried to whisper.
âWell, I might have tried on my bathing- suit at home and then showed him while he made breakfastâ, Lorelai grinned.
âOooh, so you did it in the kitchen again?â, Sookie asked excitedly
âSookie!â, Lorelai said, but laughed. âSam was right there wanting his breakfastâ, she informed her friend.
âAw, so no kitchen sex?â
âNo, no kitchen sexâ, Lorelai shook her head and looked over to the kidâs pool where Sookies daughters were playing.
âHey is Martha allowed to use her water-wings to make bubbles in the water?â, she turned back to Sookie.
âMartha! Stop that and blow up your water-wings again!â Sookie screamed from the blanket to the pool, but Martha just laughed.
âMartha! Right now! Stop that or I will get you! Martha! I will come and get youâ Sookie yelled and Lorelai patted Kairaâs back soothingly when the baby started to fuzz.
âPrincess, you know that aunt Sookie is always yelling and squealing⦠no big dealâ, she whispered in her daughterâs ear and kissed her head. When she looked back up she found her friend staring at her with a wide smile.
âWhat?â Lorelai asked confused.
âItâs just so nice seeing you like thisâ, Sookie shrugged.
âLike what?â
âSo⦠I donât know.. happy I guessâ.
âIâve been happy before Sookieâ, Lorelai laughed and blushed.
âBut not like this. Since you got married and had Sam and Kaira.. I donât knowâ, Sookie trailed off and shrugged again.
âYeah, well.. itâs what I always wanted and now I have it. After all this time with just Rory and me I somehow feel like I am finally having a family. I mean we had a family before, Rory and me, but itâs not the same. I might never be Kairaâs best friend, but I was her mother from the first second and she has a father to watch over her as well. Itâs just... sometimes I canât believe it all⦠and then I get sad because he was right there all these years and I was just too ignorant to see him. We could have had this years agoâ, Lorelai said, her smile gone now.
âDo you think it would have lasted?â Sookie asked her.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI just donât know... maybe you needed all this time and the mistakes that came with it to get hereâ, Sookie wondered.
âMaybe youâre rightâ, Lorelai replied and smiled when Kaira started to suck on her shoulder.
âYou canât be serious, honeyâ, Lorelai said to her daughter when she took her from her shoulder and looked at her.
âSeems like she inherited your appetiteâ, Emilyâs voice could be heard suddenly and Lorelai looked up.
âMom, dad⦠what are you doing here?â
âWell, you were raving about the opening of the pool so we thought we could join you. We thought we could spend some time with our grandchildrenâ, Emil explained while Richard placed a blanket and chairs on the ground, together with a pick-nick table and several other things.
âWhere is Sam?â Emily asked after looking around.
âIn the water with Luke and Daveyâ, Lorelai said and gave Kaira her thumb to suck on, but it wasnât what Kaira wanted and within seconds she was starting to fuzz and cry.
âOh kid, youâre gonna eat me aliveâ, Lorelai said and took the blanket out of the bag and lay it over her shoulder and her chest so she could nurse her daughter.
âUhm, I think I am going to find Luke and Samâ, Richard said uncomfortably and walked off, when he heard the smacking sounds Kaira made on Lorelaiâs breast.
âRichard you forgot you capâ Emily called after him, but he waved her off and walked away as fast as he could without running.
âWhat is his problem?â Sookie asked and held out a towel for her youngest daughter who had just come out of the pool.
âI guess he is not too fond of seeing me breast-feed Kairaâ, Lorelai laughed.

When Richard had found Luke, Sam and Davey he watched Luke and the boys for a while until Sam saw.
âGrandpa!â he screamed excitedly and tried to swim to his grandfather, who stood on the edge of the pool, but Luke held him tight and slowly walked over to his father-in-law.
âHey Richard. Didnât know you were comingâ, he greeted him and handed him Sam, who was dripping wet.
âYeah, well⦠Emily decided that the opening of the pool would be a nice opportunity to pay you a visitâ, he explained and handed Sam back to Luke, his beige trousers already soaked.
âItâs good to see you again, but the pool isnât really worth it. I think the one you have at home is bigger than that oneâ, Luke shrugged.
âIt is not that big, but Lorelai is very enthusiastic about the little festivals in this town, so it is nice to experience one ourselves.â
âLorelai is exaggerating. Itâs just loud and annoying and crowdedâ¦â Luke started.
âAnd still you are hereâ, Richard stated.
âYeah, wellâ¦â Luke shrugged.
âGrandpa look! I diveâ, Sam interrupted them and splashed with his face into the water, like Luke had shown him. Seconds later he came back up, gasping, giggling and dripping.
âReally good Samâ, Richard nodded approvingly while Luke whipped the water out of Samâs face with his hand.
âGrandpa look!â Sam said again and dove under again. Suddenly something splashed, Richard found himself in the pool, Luke couldnât see anything for a moment.
âI got him! He is save! He is saveâ Kirk yelled and held up Sam, to show that he was okay. Because of his lifeguard job, he had thought that Sam was drowning, had jumped into the pool, had accidentally thrown Richard in with him and had disturbed Samâs diving show, what caused the boy to cry now.
âKirk! Give me my son!â Luke roared and took Sam from him.
âI saved him Luke!â Kirk insisted.
âHe was diving, you idiot, not drowning!â
âBut the water is deep over there and I had to save him. Itâs my job as a lifeguardâ, Kirk insisted.
âYou canât even swim Kirk!â Luke yelled at him and got out of the pool with his son, Davey and Richard following.
âDaddy, diveâ, Sam cried.
âLater, buddy, You can dive later when this id⦠guy is goneâ, Luke told him and held him tight.
âHey, what happened, honey?â Lorelai asked, still nursing Kaira when the men came back.
âKirk âsavedâ Samâ, Luke snorted.
âI dive mommyâ, Sam whined.
âOh, poor thingâ, Lorelai smiled and stroked over Samâs hair. Luke lay him down and got him out of his wet trunks, put on a diaper and his bathing-robe and then grabbed a towel for himself.
âGrandmaâ, Sam exclaimed when he saw Emily and jumped into her arms. Her nearly made the chair on which she was sitting topple over.
âSam, pay attention! Youâre grandma will use it against you for the rest of your life if you make her fall now. Although it would be hilarious to seeâ, Lorelai lectured him, but couldnât contain a smile.
âOh Lorelai please! Iâm not resentfulâ, Emily said and rolled her eyes, while she adjusted Sam on her lap.
âYou? Not resentful? Youâre still angry with me because I spilled juice over a dress when I was barely a year oldâ, Lorelai huffed.
âIt was a really nice dressâ, Richard added.
âMommy, I wanâ juiceâ, Sam said.
âWe donât have juice here Sam, but we brought teaâ, Lorelai replied.
âBut I wanâ juice, mommyâ, Sam started to whine.
âSam, stop yammering!â, Luke said, gave him a stern look and Sam went quiet.
âTea daddy?â he asked and smiled brightly.
âYouâre such a charmer, babyâ, Lorelai laughed when she saw his smile. Luke got up and got the bottle with tea out of Samâs diaper bag and handed it to him. Emily took off the cap for him and he snuggled against his grandmother while he nursed his tea.
~*~
The rest of the day passed without any other incidents and Luke gave Taylor his microphone back when they left the pool. After another round of bickering and a dinner together Emily and Richard had driven back to Hartford.
âIs he asleep?â Lorelai asked when Luke came back into the living-room without Sam, who he had been bathing.
âYeah, heâs out. I guess the swimming made him tiredâ, Luke said and plopped down on the couch beside her. He leaned back against the couch cushions and closed his eyes for a second.
âTired, honâ?â Lorelai asked him and stroked with her left hand up and down his neck.
âYeah, Samâs diving was wearing me outâ, he sighed, but smiled.
âWell, you taught him how to do itâ, Lorelai said.
âYeah, big mistake. Once he started I thought he would never stop againâ.
âUhuhâ, Lorelai said and started to smile at him, while her hand was still massaging his neck.
âWhat?â he asked when he saw her smile.
âKaira is asleep. Absolutely exhausted. She feel asleep mid-nursingâ, Lorelai informed him.
âYeah Iâm beat as well. We should go to bedâ, Luke said and slowly got up.
âLukeâ, Lorelai said slowly and got up as well.
âHuh?â he asked and turned back to her, because he had been walking towards the stairs already. Loerlai remained silent and just dropped the bathrobe she wore to the ground.
âWhy are you still wearing this? I thought you took a shower?â Luke asked when he saw that she was wearing the bathing-suit underneath the bathrobe.
âI thought we might come back to the discussion how spectacular they areâ¦â she said and slowly walked towards him, the looped her arms around his neck.
âYou know exactly just how spectacular they areâ, Luke said, but smiled and looked to her chest.
âIt can never hurt to hear it againâ¦although at the moment I would prefer you to show meâ, she grinned back.
âI guess I could do thatâ, he nodded, looked up to her face and leaned in, kissing her slowly.
âGoodâ, she nodded when they broke the kiss and hugged him for a second before they walked upstairs to explore just how spectacular they found each other.
