"Ooh, das wird toll", flüsterte Lorelai Rory zu, kaum in der Lage, ihre Aufregung zu bändigen.
Rory kicherte.
Lukas grunzte.
Die erste Person auf der Bühne war Kirk. Er war damit beschäftigt, an einer Art Schaukasten herumzubasteln, der von einem Laken verdeckt war. Lorelai beobachtete ihn interessiert.
Patty marschierte hinter Kirk auf die Bühne. Sie trug eine Schautafel und stellte sie auf die rechte Seite des Podiums. Dann zuckte sie angesichts der fragenden Blicke, die sie erhielt, die Achseln; offenbar selbst unsicher, welchen Zweck dieses Objekt erfüllen sollte.
Augenblicke später trat Taylor ein, ein gewitztes Lächeln im Gesicht. Er grüÃte alle Anwesenden mit einem Nicken, als er die Bühne überquerte und sich an seinen gewohnten Platz hinterm Podium stellte. Er räusperte sich und begann seine vorbereitete Rede. "Wie den meisten von euch bekannt ist, habe ich an in der vergangenen Woche an einem qualvollen Zustand gelitten-"
"Ist er schon vorbei?" Ein paar ungeduldige Rufe kamen aus der Menge.
âLasst mich bitte ausreden!â erwiderte Taylor scharf. Er machte eine kurze Pause, sammelte seine Gedanken und fuhr dann fort:" Meine Reise begann am vergangenen Montag, als sich mein Leben für immer verändern sollte ... "
"Ich denke, er ist immer noch auf dieser Reise", flüsterte Lorelai den Leuten in ihrer Reihe zu, während Taylor weiterfaselte. "Sie wissen schon, im Stil von Jefferson Airplane." Das brachte einige Leute zum schmunzeln.
Taylor erhob seine Stimme, was ihm wieder die volle Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums einbrachte. "Und am Ende ... wurde ich für meine göttliche Geduld und unnachahmliche Stärke belohnt. Es ist vorrüber."
Es wurde still im Raum.
"Es ist vorbei?" fragte Gypsy schlieÃlich.
Taylor nickte. "Es ist vorbei."
"Es ist vorrüber!" riefen mehrere Leute fröhlich. Applaus brandete auf.
"Wann ist es vorbeigegangen?" fragte Morey Taylor im Namen der übrigen Anwesenden.
"An diesem Abend", sagte Taylor.
Gypsy stand von ihrem Sitz auf und johlte. Kirk sah sie von seiner Position neben dem Schaukasten finster an.
"Sie hat den Spieleinsatz gewonnen," erklärte Lorelai denen, die durch Gypsys plötzlichen Ausbruch erschrocken waren.
"Das bringt mich zu meinem nächsten Punkt der Tagesordnung", plapperte Taylor weiter, unberührt von dem Geschehen um ihn herum.
"Ist es schon Zeit?â fragte Kirk unruhig.
âNoch nicht Kirk. Ich sagte doch, warte auf mein Signalâ antwortete Taylor streng.
Er ging näher zu der Schautafel, nahm einen Filzstift und begann eine Art Illustration zu zeichnen. Er erklärte dem Publikum sein Diagramm in einem dynamischen, lehrerhaften Ton. âDer Nierenstein tauchte in der linken Niere auf.â Er hielt inne und deutete auf das Bild.
"Als der Stein in beunruhigendem Tempo weiterwuchs, stieà er gewaltsam gegen die Wände meiner zarten Organe, bis er schlieÃlich die Barriere, die sich ihm in den Weg stellte, durchbrach und sich in meinen Harnleiter drängte.â Wiederholt zeigte er auf seine Zeichnung und skizzierte den Weg des Steins.
"Okay, er hat definitiv was genommen!", sagte Andrew von seinem Platz inmitten der verblüfften Menge.
"Muss die anhaltende Wirkung des Morphium sein", vermutet Jackson.
"Der Stein bahnte sich einen Weg durch den langen, dunklen Tunnel meines Harnleiters und kam vorübergehend in meiner Blase zur Ruhe.", fuhr Taylor fort.
"Es dauerte viele Stunden, aber schlieÃlich machte der Stein seinen letzten Abstieg: durch den schmalen Durchgang meiner Harnröhre ... und in den, wie ich hoffte, Filter. Und es ist für euch alle von Vorteil, dass ich mit meinen Bemühungen, den Stein einzusammeln, so anspruchsvoll war."
Er blickte zu Kirk und gab ihm grünes Licht.
"Kirk, du kannst es enthüllen!"
Kirk lächelte siegreich und enthüllte den Schaukasten, der sich als groÃen Vitrine herausstellte. Im Inneren des Gehäuses, auf einem sich drehenden Regal, lag Taylors Nierenstein.
Geräusche des Abscheus und Ekels erfüllten den Raum.
"Ich hab den Appetit verloren", stöhnte Lukas.
"Hey, Rory, gibst du mal die Red Vines weiter?â fragte Lorelai im selben Moment.
Taylor schaudert. "Lorelai, sagen sie bloà nicht âweitergebenâ."
Sie verkniff sich ein Lachen. "Will noch jemand ein Red Vine?"
"Nee, ich denk´ ich wird´ das Angebot weitergeben", sagte Gypsy ein wenig lauter als nötig.
[Der Wortwitz ist schlecht ins deutsche übertragbar: Lore sagt zu Rory. âPass the Red Vine?â
Talyor meint daruafhin sie solle das wort pass vermeiden; vermutlich, weli sonst jeder andere auch ein Red Vine will. Lore frag dann in die Runde und Gypsy meint âI´ll passâ was im englsichen âich passeâ bedeutet]
Taylor starrte sie an.
"Tretet näher Allerseits!â wies Kirk die Menge an. "Kommt und seht den Stein, der Taylor verwüstete. Ein Stein - so groÃ, das ihr ihn an eurem Finger tragen wollt. Nur fünf Dollar das Stück!"
"Kirk!" rief Taylor. "Ich habe der Vitrine zugestimmt, aber nicht der Gebührenpflichtigen Besichtigung. Es ist kostenlos! Die ersten Besichtigung ist kostenlos."
"Nun, dieses Angebot ist zu gut, um es weiterzugeben!" Jackson rief.

"Die nächste Person, die das Wort âweitergebenâ sagt, hat bei Dooses Hausverbot." drohte Taylor
Langsam aber sicher bildete die Menge eine Schlange, um einen Blick auf das so lange beredete Objekt zu werfen.
"Ich denke, Sie sollten es wie William Shatner machen und ihn bei eBay verkaufen", sagte Lorelai zu Taylor, als sie an der Reihe war, das Ausstellungsstück zu begutachten.
Taylor schien den Vorschlag abzuwägen.
Nachdem alle interessierten Beteiligten Gelegenheit gehabt hatten, die Vitrine zu sehen, kehrte Taylor auf das Podium zurück und winkte, damit jeder seine Plätze wiedereinahm.
"Das beendet unseren gemeinsamen Abend", informierte er die Städter. "Ich danke euch allen für eure Unterstützung und guten Wünsche während der schweren Zeit, die ich hatte. Ich möchte auch daran erinnern, dass am 9. März Weltnierentag ist. Sie können sich eine Broschüre auf dem Weg nach drauÃen mitnehmen."
"Dort könnt ihr auch T-shirts kaufen," fügte Kirk hinzu. "Hundert Prozent Baumwolle in drei verschiedenen Designs", betonte er und hielt Beispiele seiner Waren in die Luft. Taylor sah ihn erstaunt an.
"Ooh, ich will ein 'Nierensteine rocken!' T-Shirt!" quietschte Lorelai.
"Ich mag âMorphium ist für Junkiesâ" gab Rory zu.
"Hey, du hast meinen Spruch gestohlen!â klagte Andrew Kirk an, nachdem dieser das dritte Design der T-shirts zeigte. "Nierensteine : Lieber fällt mir Vogelmist auf den Kopf!â
"Ich gebs dir zum halben Preis", bot Kirk an.
"Ich bezahle dich nicht! Du solltest MICH bezahlen!" schrie Andrew zurück.
Lorelai hakte sich bei Rory und Luke unter. "Ich denke, wir sollten uns trennen, bevor ein Tumult ausbricht ... und die Vitrine zerbricht.â
Luke und Rory stimmten sofort zu. Sie schlüpften aus der Tür und in die Nachtluft, gerade als die T-shirts herumzufliegen begannen.
Lorelai runzelte die Stirn, als sie den Gehweg erreichten. "Ich wollte unbedingt ein T-Shirt."
Luke schaute sie an, dann Miss Pattys Tanzschule und schüttelte den Kopf. "Wir treffen zu Hause."
Lorelai strahlte. "Ich nehme eins in M ... und für Rory auch eins", beharrte sie. "Wir sehen zu Hause."
Er nickte und trottete langsam wieder in das Kriegsgebiet.
"Ich liebe diese Stadt", sagte Lorelai glücklich und hakte sich bei ihrer Tochter unter, als sie nach Hause gingen.
