âOkay Mia, so Iâll just come by tomorrow to look at the inn, take in the atmosphere, stay for a few days â at my own expenses of course! â and then Iâll have a storyboard ready for you. Good, see you tomorrow, bye.â Lorelai hung up with a content feeling, knowing already that she had another customer on board. She smiled âthose small town people, so adorably weird and shrewdâ She did a double take as she looked at the clock âMan, is it already ten??â she slowly packed some files to go over at home into her bag and headed outside, after calling Charlie, her driver, to take her home. To her empty castle-like home where she resided like a princess, still waiting for her prince to come.
Later the next day, Lorelai and Mia stepped out of the inn, Lorelai in a business suit, gesticulating animatedly, in the middle of her gushing about the hotel and telling Mia about the big ad campaign that was forming in her mind as she took in the beauty and serenity of this small hotel. Mia on the contrary practically hung on every word Lorelai was saying, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth; she had taken an instant liking to the lively young woman who seemed just the perfect choice for promoting the inn a little.
Interrupting the words spilling out of Lorelai she suggested that theyâd go somewhere for coffee to sign the contracts and close up the deal. She didnât need to see the storyboards to know that this campaign was going to be something to remember because Lorelai had good taste and seemed so into the inn and the idea of creating something special for this place. Mia pulled Lorelai across the town square, pointing out the lovely gazebo in the middle (Lorelai couldnât take her eyes off it anymore) and finally pulling open the door to the only place in Stars Hollow to get good coffee: Lukeâs Diner.
Without noticing the sign on the outside, Lorelai let Mia direct her to one of the tables and Lorelai sat down, taking out several official looking papers and some pens to sign. She shuffled through the papers, trying to find the one she was looking for when she heard an all too familiar voice, a voice that even âhauntedâ her in her dreams âWhat can I get you, ladies? And Mia, itâs really rude not to introduce a new customer to the proprietor of this place!â Lorelai jumped about a mile when she heard who was talking and slowly raised her eyes only to find her wide-eyed gaze matched with a nonchalant one from piercingly blue eyes â not so differently amazing as her own.
When Luke noticed,
who exactly Mia had brought to his diner, his breath caught in his throat. âLuke this is Lorelai Gilmore, sheâs-â âI know, Miaâ he said without taking his eyes off Lorelai. âYeahâ¦umâ¦weâve metâ she replied quickly at the questioning look from Mia, which she only caught from the corner of her eye as she was still staring at Luke like he was a mirage. âOookay, so are do we have to do to get coffee around here?â Mia smacked Luke playfully on the arm âCoffeeâll be ready in a minute, is there anything else I can get you gorgeous girls?â
What the hellâ¦? Where did that come from, this didnât usually come out of his mouthâ¦.
He still hadnât taken his eyes off of Lorelai so she felt like the compliment was directed directly at her and not to her and Mia as he phrased it. She looked down at her folded hands, blushing slightly.
Christ, what is wrong with me? I feel like a freakinâ school girl once again âIâll have the turkey sandwich with extra chilli fries please. Lorelai, whatâll you have? Lorelai? Hello?â
âHm? What? Sorry, my mind was somewhere elseâ âI can tellâ Mia winked at her. Frowning at her, Lorelai turned to Luke âIâll have a cheeseburger with extra cheese, chilli fries â make them extra hot -, lots of bacon, two scrambled eggs, one sausage and four blueberry pancakesâ Lukeâs eyes widened slightly at her choice of food and especially at the quantity of her order. âYou gonna eat all that?â Mia voiced the question that was forming on Lukeâs lips âYeah, why?â Lorelai shrugged casually and went back to shuffling her papers. Luke still stood there, mouth hanging open, frozen to the spot. Noone, not even a guy, had ever ordered this much food for one single person. âHey, remember in what mood I was when I almost ran into you with your coffee?â He flinched a little at the remembrance âYeah well, if I donât get food and coffee soon, Iâm gonna flip back into that mood, that could get ugly my friendâ
She smiled faintly at him to make sure he knew she was teasing, but not enough to undermine her threat. He hurried back to the kitchen to give Caesar the orders and to pour Mia and Lorelai their coffees. He watched her carefully, taking in every detail of her appearance. She looked great in this black, slim-fitted suit with her high-heels, her hair was bouncy as her mood was apparently and her cheeks were still flushed from the excitement over the inn. Or thatâs at least what he thought had caused the blush. She was talking excitedly to Mia, her eyes sparkling with excitement. He took the coffee cups and carefully set them down on their table. Lorelai made a beeline for her cup and gulped down at least half of it âHot! Hothothot! HOT! Oh my God, I can never taste anything againâ she whined âYeah well, coffee isnât supposed to be gulped down, yâknowâ he couldnât help the smart-ass remark and got a dirty glare from her. He brought them their food and for Lorelai some crushed ice to make her tongue feel better. She smiled at him gratefully and thatâs when he first noticed the billion-watt bulb smile that radiated through the room and through him and made him want to smile back at her. But that wouldnât be him, he thought, so he just kept his smile to himself and busied himself with wiping the counter.
