And don't say, it was slow! xD
Danke an Jule und Ramona fuer ihre boesen Feedbacks, but it's better than nothing xD
The next part's for Jule because she once told me about a specific book (you'll see) and because she's going to kill me... xD
Chapter twelve: Twinkle like little stars
Even if you fall, I won't let you break. When all the noise is telling you to run away, run to me.
As they didn’t hear anything, Rory reached out her hand and knocked again, this time a little more determined.
“Yeah, come in,” a very silent and fragile voice answered.
Luke held his breath.
“It isn’t her…” he thought.
This voice seemed so different to Lorelai’s voice. But Luke had to admit that he hadn’t heard this voice, this wonderful voice in a long time.
He hadn’t noticed that Rory was looking at him, blankly faced. It seemed, like she, too, was not sure whether this voice was Lorelai’s.
Luke took a deep breath, nodded determined and then slowly opened the door. He entered another white, bald and cheerless room. There was only one single bed.
As Luke stepped further into the room he barely recognized the person lying on the bed. The woman lay on her back and her hands were petting her stomach. This woman clearly was pregnant and the birth date couldn’t be far away anymore. But this wasn’t the fact, which made it hard for Luke to identify the person.
It was her face. To describe it with pale would have been an understatement, it was chalk-white, her lips nothing more than a thin line and her brown hair was carelessly put in a ponytail.
In fact, Luke wouldn’t have recognized the woman, if it weren’t for the eyes. Those blue eyes, which used to chain him, which used to make him amazed, which used to be able to twinkle like little stars, which used to tell him I love you. But now they seemed to be sad or even worse, they seemed to be lifeless, almost dead. But nevertheless, Luke imagined for a split of a second that he had seen that particular spark in them. The spark which always had been there, whenever she was happy, whenever she talked about Rory, whenever she talked about their relationship.
It was her eyes that gave her away.
Lorelai’s eyes.
After all these months without seeing her, Luke wasn’t immediately able to grasp that he was actually standing in front of her. He had imagined this moment for such a long time, thinking about what he would say to her. But as he was standing there now, looking at her, he was too overwhelmed, too lost in this moment to say anything. So he remained staring at her, forgetting about anything around him but those blue eyes.
Finally, he could break the connection between their eyes and was able to think straighter. Right at this moment, the voice, which seemed to be so far off of Lorelai’s said,
“Luke…”
Luke stepped closer to her and softly said,
“Lorelai. I… what… why…” he broke off, unable to create a real sentence.
The thin line which was supposed to be her lips formed an almost invisible smile. It seemed like she was too tired or too weak to even do that.
A few moments passed in complete silence, then,
“Mom.”
Luke turned around. He had totally forgotten that Rory had been entering the room behind him. She, too, looked like a mixture or surprise, confusion and sadness. But there was one thing that Luke hadn’t seen on her for a long time. It was happiness.
“Mom, I’m so glad it’s you. I missed you so.”
“I missed you, too,” Lorelai responded and now she seemed to get some of her color back.
Again, silence. Luke still hadn’t moved from where he was standing.
“Why are you here?”
He heard Rory’s voice from far away, just like she was speaking from the other side of the hospital. His mind was racing with questions he wanted to be answered for eight months now. Eight incredible lonely months. But as he was looking at her right at his moment, his mind was somehow blank. An odd mixture of emotions swirled in his body. He was happy, incredibly happy that he finally had found her but at the same time something similar to anger spread across his body. Why did she take off? Why didn’t she want to have him around? Why didn’t she tell him about the baby? Why?
“Doctor Sutherland put me on bed-rest, so I’m in the hospital,” Lorelai answered quietly.
Luke didn’t listen closely, his look swept around the room. Two photos caught his eyes. One of her and him dancing on Liz’ wedding, he had never seen this picture before. Maybe Liz gave it Lorelai some time ago without showing him. But what really shocked him was the other one. It was a four-year-old Rory, who was standing in front of her grandparent’s house. This picture used to stand on their chimneypiece and Luke hadn’t noticed it was gone for eight months. He always thought she didn’t take anything, but obviously he was wrong, so wrong.
“Luke? Did I hear what I just said?” Rory’s voice brought him back to reality.
“Sorry?” he replied slightly confused.
“I’m going to the cafeteria to get some coffee, so you can talk or…” she broke off, seeing Luke’s distant look.
“Thanks, hon,” Lorelai replied instead of him and Rory went out of the room.
Luke, once again, stared at her for a long time then finally, he said,
“Lorelai… why… are… you… here?”
“The doctor said…”
“No, I mean, why did you disappear?” he cut her off.
“Look, I didn’t disappear to a place called here, I’m just here… in Seattle,” she answered and added, as he saw the confused look on his face. “It’s a book.”
Luke subtly nodded but asked,
“Why, Lorelai, why? I mean you’re pregnant, you could, you should, no, you had to tell me!”
“But…” Lorelai began, one single tear rolling down her face.
And don't say, it was slow! xD
