Part VI:
The next day arrived. Lorelai was freaking out a little bit.
"I have to tell him. And I have to tell him other things, too. This is gonna suck." , she thought over and over.
"And Chris...Don’t know what I should do about him."
The ringing of the telephone diverted her thoughts. She ran downstairs to catch it, but too late, the answering machine sprang to life:
"These are the Gilmore girls, as you obviously know, but we’re not here right now, we have a life, get over it! ....Peep."
Lorelai stopped running, as she heard a familiar voice speaking:
"Hey, Lore, this is Christopher. I just wanted to ask, whether you’re down to earth again. You totally freaked me out, last time I saw you....Anyway, I wanna talk to you. Call me back....please...okay....bye, then."
"Oh, Chris, you really have a talent to call or come to inconvenient times."
Lorelai said to herself and decided not to call him immediately.
"Tomorrow will do it, too."
She turned around and continued to think about Luke and their dinner.
"What should I wear...Jeez...I need Rory...but then she would find out, how I feel about Luke. Damn it."
So, Lorelai decided to walk back upstairs and search for a convenient outfit by herself. At that moment, Rory opened the front door, and shouted:
"Mom, I’m here! D’you already have an outfit for tonight? I wanna pick something for you!"
Lorelai, too, shouted:
"No, I haven’t but I wasn’t thinking about it much. I mean, it’s just Luke, you know".
"Yeah, sure, of course it’s just Luke", Rory replied, finally arriving at Lorelai’s bedroom, "But I really wanna dress you up a little. I mean, not long and you won’t fit in your clothes anymore.", she added carefully.
She wasn’t so sure, how her mom would react. Rory wasn’t sure whether her mom was happy. She kept on saying that she was, but something bothered her, Rory knew that, but she wasn’t quite sure, what it was. Maybe Luke. Or it was her Dad. Or the pregnancy itself. Rory was confused, but decided that her mom was getting back to normal. At least she was going out again.
"That’s a good thing" , Rory thought.
"Yeah, you’re right. But I don’t want to be overdressed. I don’t want Luke to be uncomfortable – you know how he is.", Lorelai replied, "And I think I will tell him about the child. I feel it’s right tonight", she added, looking at her daughter.
"Alright, do that, but promise me. You have to tell Dad about it, too. As soon as possible. He has a right to know it, okay?", Rory said and looked back into her mother’s eyes.
"Please promise me!"
"Okay, okay. I’m gonna do that tomorrow. But right now, find me a fabulous dress, kiddo!"
Meanwhile, only a few meters away in his apartment, Luke had the very same problem.
"Jeez, what should I wear? I haven’t been on a date for years. I don’t wanna be overdressed. Maybe Lorelai just wanted a casual dinner. Damn it. A tie, or no tie? That’s the question here. If yes, which one?"
"Alright, don’t be stupid, wear a suit but without a tie. That’s casual, but not too much. That will do it." Luke said to himself and started to dress.
7 o’clock. The doorbell at the Gilmore girls rang. Luke, outside, was freezing. For the first time in five weeks it snowed. Technically. it was the second snow this year. Luke took it as a sign. He remembered what Lorelai told him last year.
"Snow always has something magical to me. I know, every time it’s snows, something good happens."
Lorelai herself diverted his thoughts.
"Hi Luke", she said, "I will be ready in a minute, I just need to get my handbag".
"Oh, okay, I’ll wait here." Luke replied.
As Lorelai came outside, they walked to Luke’s car and drove off to Antonio’s. The ride was silent, but Lorelai thought it was a comfy silence. Again, everything seemed to be right.
They arrived at Antonio’s. As Lorelai took off her coat, Luke held his breath.
"She looks fantastic. Oh, my god. This dress!", Luke thought.
Indeed, Lorelai looked great. Rory had picked her a long, black dress, sleeveless.
"You’re looking great tonight, Lorelai", Luke said as they sat down at the table.
"Thanks very much. Flattering will bring you everywhere.", Lorelai said smiling.
As the waiter brought the menus, they began to talk. And talked, through the meal, the dessert. They enjoyed themselves.
But suddenly the joyful atmosphere changed. Luke, looked into Lorelai’s eyes.
"Lorelai, do you remember that day, as I wanted to talk to you?" Luke asked and added faltering, "As I ran?"
Lorelai looked up. Again, she saw Luke’s eyes turn into black.
"Do it now! Just tell him. Before anything happens!", Lorelai thought and began to speak:
"Yeah, Luke, I remember. But, first, I have to tell you something. You won’t like it. But promise me, you listen first, okay?"
"Well, okay. I will.", Luke, looking a little confused, answered. "I promise.", he added, because Lorelai looked at him sceptical.
"Alright", Lorelai looked him in the eyes, "A few weeks ago, Rory’s dad came over. Completely out of the blue. I mean, I was really surprised to see him. He hadn’t showed up for years. And, well, I, or rather we, made a big mistake. We....", she felt incapable to speak any further.
Five minutes went by. Luke decided to say nothing. He just waited. He had the feeling, once Lorelai wanted to speak further, she would do it.
And finally she did.
"Luke, we slept with each other. And the result is, I’m pregnant." Lorelai chose these last words very carefully.
"I’m sorry."
Luke had become pale. His little world came crashing down on him.
"Pregnant? I don’t get it. I thought, were would be a chance, that she....", he thought
He said nothing. Again, there was silence. Awkward minutes. Finally he managed to stutter:
"Woah. That’s tough......I mean.....are you....keeping.....it?
"Yeah, yes, of course I will", Lorelai responded.
She looked at Luke closely.
"What is he thinking? He looks pale. I hate me for doing this."
"Lorelai, I don’t know what to say. I mean, are you back...with him?
Luke was afraid of the answer. Both ways it wasn’t good. Either she was, and he – Luke - would be the victim, or the baby wouldn’t have a dad.
"No, Luke. He doesn’t know about it, yet. But honestly I don’t want to be with him. Not anymore."
Again, Lorelai looked up. Right into his eyes.
"Tell him now! Just do it. Come on!" she thought.
"Luke....I.....", Lorelai began, but she didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence. Luke stood up.
"Lorelai, I have to go. I’m sorry. I can’t stand it right now. I have to go."
With these words, he went out of the restaurant, leaving Lorelai disappointed behind. She looked out the window.
The snow had stopped falling.
