Quietly, he sat down on a chair beside her bed. She had been ill for almost three days now and even though Luke knew, it was just a little flu, he worried like hell. She was his everything. It seemed like only yesterday that she lay on his doorstep totally unaware of all the things sheâd been thru. But in reality, it hadnât been yesterday. That yesterday had been five years ago. Five years with a lot of trouble, fun and confusion. Luke couldnât deny that that little girl had enriched his life impermeable and forever.
She turned around and slowly opened her eyes.
âHey Daddy,â she whispered. âWhy are you here? Shouldnât you be in the diner?â
âNo, Rory,â he answered softly. âThe diner is fine without me. How are you feeling, honey?â
âIâm gonna be fine, I guess. Itâs just the flu, Daddy,â she tried to pacify him.
Luke let out a laugh, sometimes he couldnât believe that this little girl was only five years old, she was much too smart for her ageâ¦
A thought occurred to Lukeâs mind and he slightly grinned at the thought of how Rory came to her name. He had desperately tried to teach her to say Lorelai but two-year-old Rory just couldnât manage it. Luke had tried everything and even though Rory could pronounce nearly everything he told her to, her name was inaccessible. Finally Luke had turned to Lory but even then, all that she could say was Rory. Since then she was Rory, not Lorelai and most of the townspeople didnât even remember her real name. Just Luke silently called her Lorelai from time to time. He didnât really know why but this name â Lorelai â seemed to be the only connection to her mother.
Her mother â Luke still was wondering every day, every moment, when he looked at the sweet little girl, who her mother was, why she had left her behind, why at his doorstep and especially whether she would ever come back. Every time when Rory talked about her mom, Luke tried to avoid the topic. It worked out really fine untilâ¦
âDaddy?â she looked up at him. âYou know Iâm ill and stuff, so tell me about my mother.â
Luke almost sprang up due to surprise. She had never asked him explicitly about her. And Luke didnât know what to tell her. He didnât know her himself. All he had was that letter, which didnât say anything really.
âWell, you know,â he began. âAll I know is that she cared for you, she made sure that you were in good hands. And Iâm sure she is very pretty, I mean, look at you, youâre the prettiest girl Iâve ever seen.â
Rory silently nodded. She seemed to be disappointed and that fact almost broke Lukeâs heart. He couldnât stand the sad look on her face. He had him head over heels and Luke couldnât do anything about that. He clumsily tried to change the subject.
âYou know what? Aunt Babette is coming today and guess what, she brings her new cat. I think itâs called Cinnamon.â
âCinnamon? Why would she call a cat like that?â she teased and a smile appeared on her face.
âAh, you know Babette, Rory,â Luke answered, âWhat was the last catâs name? Cucumber?â
âYeah, right,â she giggled and Lukeâs heart became lighter. âShe is kind of crazy, isnât she?â
âYes, well. It not just her, itâs the town, weâre living here, kiddo,â Luke said and ran his fingers thru her hair.
âAnd I wouldnât wanna live someplace else,â she concluded.
