Chapter V: How to save a life
VO: We love our lives because we think we have absolute power over them.
We hate changes because they are able to remove that power.
And some of us even hate surprises because they come surprisingly so that we canât prepare ourselves for them.

George was shocked and unable to move. He stared at Mrs. Burton whose face has already had a bluish color. Someone had put the respirator[1] on her mouth which gave her artificial respiration[2].
Only now, George took notice of the teenage girl who did not leave the womanâs side.
âMommy, please, donât die. Donât leave me alone, Mommy.â Her eyes were filled with tears and she could not stop sobbing. Tenderly, she held her motherâs hand.
âWhat happened?â George felt miserable but he tried to act professionally.
âHer daughter called the ambulance half an hour ago.â Taylor did not stop pushing the stretcher while he was talking to George. âShe said her mother couldnât breathe anymore and that she had already lost consciousness. Sheâs had no pulse for ten minutes.â
âPage Dr. Shepherd! I gonna intubate but we have to operate soon. Otherwise, sheâ¦â
George noticed the scared look on the girlâs face. âIâm sorry, but you have to wait outside the door.â He briefly nodded to Taylor who took her aside.
Addison enters the elevator that has just opened in front of her. She was lost in her chart so she did not take notice of Dr Bailey who was standing in front of her. Absorbed in thought and with full force, she stepped the resident on the foot.
âOooh, Miranda⦠Dr Bailey, Iâm sorry. Did I hurt you?â Addison adjusted her glasses and apparently, the she felt a bit sheepish about that misstep (literally spoken).
âYes, you did.â Bailey had that look on her face that made her able to stare people down. âNow, my big toe hurts.â
Addison thought about replying to that comment but she decided that it would be more comfortable for her to change the subject as fast as possible.
âI told Izzie Stevens that she was allowed to scrub in on my upcoming C-section.â Immediately after the last word has been out off her mouth, Addison wished she would have kept at Mirandaâs aching toe instead of letting her know that she had defied her order.
Silence.
âMy patient wanted her to be there when⦠she would get her babies.â Addison frowned. She expected an outburst of fury or something like that but Miranda was standing next to her pretending not to hear a word.
The ping of the elevator announced the achievement of the second floor. Addison breathed a sign of relief.
âI⦠have to go now.â She smiled briefly and then left.
Dr Bailey looked after her and when the doors closed, she could not quell a short smile.
Cristina burst into the room. Izzie paged her some minutes ago and now, she has already heard Kelly screaming outside the door.
âWha⦠Whatâs the matter?â She looked at Izzie who was standing next to the CTG.
âHer contractions are every five minutes and the twinsâ heartbeat is weak.â Izzie turned to Kelly and tried to calm her down.
âI canât get the babies now. Itâs too fast. Theyâre too⦠small.â Kelly was in pain. She became cramped[3] and laid her hands tutelary[4] on her belly.
âKelly⦠Kelly, look at me!â Izzie took her clammy[5] hand and looked her straight in the eye. âWe can do this, okay?â
âStevens, what happened?â Addison entered the room and glanced at the CTG. Izzie and Cristina only had to look at her to see that she was far from being satisfied with Kellyâs and the babiesâ present condition.
âSheâs been in labors for twelve minutes and the smaller twinâs heart rate doesnât look good.â Izzie handed her some papers.
âOkay.â Addison turned to Kelly and gave her a serious look. âKelly, we need to get the babies immediately. Dr Yang, prepare the labor room for an emergency C-section. Dr Stevens, you stay with the patient.â
Since Cristina left for emergency, Meredith has been sitting alone on the terrace of the cafeteria. Her eyes were closed and she savored the silence that encompassed her.
âI really need to talk to your resident.â
Meredith smiled keeping her eyes closed. Derek sat down next to her.
âYou begrudge some well deserved minutes of quiet to your girlfriend? Seriously?â Now, she looked at him pretending to be all disappointed.
âOh no. Enjoy it. You need to be rested for tonight.â He nodded to her expressively. Meredith roared with laughter.
âNo, seriously. I wanna show you something.â
âDo I want to see what you want to show me?â Meredith was amused but not really sure in which direction this conversation is going to lead to.
âOh yes. Just trust me.â He smiled brightly and Meredith sighed resignedly.
âWould you mind being a little more enthusiastic? At least pretend to because I really look forward to tonight and I donât want my girlfriend to be dark and twisty again soâ¦â
âStop it!â Meredith had to laugh because Derek really seemed to be sad by her not jumping for joy.
âOf course I look forward to spend time with you. Alone.â She frowned. âWe are alone, arenât we?â
âOh yes.â He looked at her adoringly and now, Meredith could hardly wait for the upcoming night.
Both of them were taken out of their thoughts by the sound of Derekâs pager.
âWho is it?â Meredith was worried.
âMrs. Burton. Damn it.â Without hesitation he jumped up. âIâve got to go.â He kissed her softly and sprinted away.
Addison has just opened Kellyâs abdominal wall[6] and the uterus. Izzie and Cristina stood behind her, holding a towel for each baby.
âHere comes number one.â Izzie stepped forward and took the tiny child out of Addisonâs hands.
Gently, she laid the girl into the incubator.
âYang, quickly.â Cristina did the same with the other twin.
âOkay, looks good. I need toâ¦â She stopped when blood splattered her face.
âSheâs losing blood. Damn it!â Addison tried desperately to stop the bleeding but it was unsuccessful.
âIâm losing her!â

In fact, it destroys us little by little.
