So, here it comes, the new chapter...
reFBs are already given, I guess. So without talking...
this one is for Holly because I really want to know her name now...*rofl*
part XIV:
I cursed myself for hating to wear a watch. I just didn’t like to wear one. A bracelet okay, but no watch, much too heavy. But today, I really needed one. I was sitting in Luke’s diner, drinking coffee after coffee. I already had about 10 cups and Luke was not yet back again. I was nervous, Luke had been away for too long now. I still couldn’t believe that he really did this for me. He’d just been amazing to me, plucking up all his courage to go to my parents. I kind of admired him.
Time went by and the coffee went by. 15 cups already.
Then, finally the door to the diner opened. The owner himself was standing there, wearing a suit, which looked adorable on him. Almost breathtaking. I stood up to approach to him but he just gave me a wink that I should follow him outside. I grabbed my coat and my scarf and together we went out. For a few moments we walked in silence until we arrived at Stars Hollow Park. We sat down on a bench. It was freezing but I didn’t care.
Finally, Luke began to speak. He seemed a little disturbed and I had the feeling that something bad would come up. But,
"It went okay. They believed me, I guess."
I looked at him closely, something wasn’t alright with him, I could tell.
"How did they react?", I asked softly but also determined, I really wanted to know everything they did, said.
"I don’t know, Lorelai, I do not know them but I think they really miss you. Your mother seemed very fragile and your dad fought hard against... something, and..."
Quickly I chimed in, surprised,
"My dad? My dad was there? But he never had been at home. Always far away on business."
Attentively, Luke looked at me.
"Well, he was there and he, too, seemed to want you back. I mean you’re just 21 and you left so early", he hesitated, running through his hair, "Your mom said she would pay a million dollars just to see you once again."
"A million? Well, that’s not such a big fortune for them..."
First, Luke looked confused at me, then he realized, I was joking. He smiled weakly. But still there was a dark cloud above his head.
"Luke? What’s up with you? You seem sad."
He looked me in the eyes. His blue eyes, in the meantime, were shimmering.
"I can’t say this, Lorelai. Because it isn’t right. It’s not your fault that you still got them, even though they may seem far away... But they are there..."
He looked away. His eyes were now fixed on his knees.
I took his hand and squeezed it softly.
"Come on", I encouraged him, "You can tell me."
He sighed, then he continued,
"Promise me not to tell anybody?"
I simply nodded.
"Okay, I’ve never told anybody about this. It’s just that while your parents are still alive, you didn’t have a chance to talk to them. And I... I would do everything to be able to do that. My mom died in a car accident when I was seven. A driver going the wrong way on the highway crashed into her. She was dead immediately. And to make bad things worse, she was pregnant. 7th month. It would have been a girl. They even had picked the name already. Elizabeth, but my mother always nicknamed her Liz...", he broke off.
I expected him to cry or something but he just sat there, staring at his knees. I said nothing. I totally had forgotten about my parents for a moment. I was only focused on Luke, who had always seemed to be so strong...
All of a sudden, Luke spoke further,
"My father never got over it. With every day he became more silent, more shut up. I mean he always was there to help me, but from this moment on, his hardware store was his life. He tried to lighten me up and stuff but it was plain to see that he was heartbroken... He died two years ago, one day after my 21st birthday. It was cancer. The lungs... I think, he didn’t really fight it. This way he could be with my mom and my lil’Sis."
Luke looked up. Still he wasn’t crying but I could feel he wanted to. I smiled at him and embraced him. Again, I cursed myself. For just being focused on my own problems when other persons got bigger ones. Somehow I felt guilty about my parents but it was nonsense. It wasn’t my fault. And still, maybe there was a chance...
Luke’s breath had become slower. He released the hug but didn’t move away from me. Instead, he stared into my eyes. And I did the same. Once again, my stomach was full of butterflies. Our noses nearly touched. I knew what was coming up. And I didn’t fight it. I knew this time, it would be right. Faltering, our lips touched. Finally, we kissed but this time, we both wanted it – and it was a great kiss. Maybe the greatest I’ve ever got. As we broke apart, I couldn’t help but smile and he did, too.
The cloud above him had disappeared.
We sat in silence, a comfy one. Then, after what, five minutes, an hour? He began to speak,
"I’m sorry, but we were about to talk about your parents... They believed me. But I don’t know anything more than I already told you. They looked fine. The only thing I know, is that their maid won’t work for them anymore."
Inevitable, I giggled.
"What did she do?"
Luke answered, also smiling,
"She didn’t answer the phone."
"Yeah, see that’s my mom..."
My mood still was lighted up but once again something bad hushed into Luke’s mind and at that moment, he spoke again,
"Actually, that telephone call wasn’t funny at all. Something was wrong. It seemed like your mother was shocked or something. She looked terrible. Then she basically kicked me out of the house. Very politely, of course."
Thoughtfully, he looked at me.
"You don’t know what it was all about?", I asked.
I really was curious because I only remembered my mom shocked once – when I told her I was pregnant.
"No, I don’t know. Like I said, I haven’t heard anything because I was leaving. I only heard your father asking who it was. Your mom said something, I think it was a name but I can’t remember it..."
I almost could see Luke racking his brains. After a little while, something seemed to pop into his mind because he said,
"It was something like Chris... Christian maybe?"
I stared at him.
Please don’t let it be...
"Christopher? Was it Christopher?"
I was afraid of the answer.
"Yeah," Luke gloated, "Yes, it was Christopher!"
I felt like there was no air around me, everything twirled.
"Are you sure?", I just managed to say.
"Yeah, I am. Christopher it is."
I couldn’t believe it and I didn’t know what to do or what to say. Luke watched me closely, as though he sensed that something was wrong but said nothing. He just looked at me, worried.
Slowly, air reached me. I could think again.
"Luke, look, I really appreciated your help, you were great. I’ll never forget that."
He smiled carefully. But he seemed confused,
"Anytime, I’m a regular Lanzelot."
"I have to go now, Rory will be at home any minute."
I stood up but hesitated for a moment and kissed him on the cheek.
"I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?"
He just nodded and I turned. I had to get away from him, from everybody. To think. How it could be possible for Christopher to have their number, to have the courage to call them and why he did so. I ran aimlessly through the streets of Stars Hollow until I stood in front of an old building. It looked like the house of the Walton’s but it was boarded up. I sat down on the stairs, which leaded to the patio.
It was when I realized I was crying. I had been thinking, I could leave this all behind and now everything came crashing down on me and I couldn’t tell to what extend. I didn’t know how long I sat there but I didn’t care either, didn’t care that I was freezing. I was buried in thoughts until something caught my eye. Something slowly made down his way to earth.
It was snow.
