for Tina, because she wants to have a new time calendar....*lol*
part XV:
I watched the snow slowly coming down to earth but I didn’t really notice it. I was much too concentrated on the events that happened that day. To see a wacky wife and a straight laced husband, who were so totally different to my parents... Thinking of them, my heart became heavier. I never talked about them really. I remember Patty and Babette trying to talk to me about my mom, when I was younger but they gave it up soon. And as my father died, I completely became a loner. Never wanted to be attached in somebody else’s life and it worked out really fine until Lorelai showed up here in Stars Hollow and turned my life upside down.
Suddenly I helped her with things about her parents, I really didn’t want to do. But I just couldn’t resist her – she still made me amazed. And I could feel that I was falling in love with her. I mean, this kiss had just been marvelous. But it wasn’t just the kiss. It was the fact that I would do everything for her, although I didn’t always understand her reactions.
Just at that moment she left me sitting there on this cold bench and I didn’t know why she ran. But after hearing the name Christopher, she was different. Stiff. And her eyes mirrored something like fear. I couldn’t help but notice the same look on her face like her mother’s as she got that telephone call in the morning.
I was incapable of thinking about anything else, sitting on that bench. I didn’t know how long I sat there but it had become dark around me. It was that time, I realized, I was freezing. Slowly, I stood up, and almost crashed into Mia, who stood right in front of me. I hadn’t heard her coming. On her hand she had Lorelai’s daughter, Rory.
"Oh, sorry", I apologized, "I didn’t see ya there."
Mia just smiled weakly. She looked rather worried. And looking at Rory, she did, too.
"What’s up with you two?", I asked becoming worried myself.
"Have you seen Lorelai? She didn’t show up at work or anywhere else. We’re desperate, we really searched everywhere and Rory said, maybe you know where she could be."
I was slightly surprised that Rory suggested me to help them but perhaps Lorelai mentioned me before. I skipped it and answered,
"I don’t know. Actually, I was with her today. We sat here, together...", I glimpsed at my watch, "Five hours ago. But dunno where she could be right now. She didn’t tell me."
The three of us stood in the Stars Hollow Park, shivering and racked our brains. Finally, I decided to do something.
"Okay, let’s search the town again. She can’t be far away. Let’s split up. Mia, take Rory and search the north. I’ll do the south. We’ll meet in an hour right here. If we haven’t found her by then, we... but we will find her."
Rory and Mia just nodded and turned around. I did the same. Aimlessly, I wandered around the streets, looked into every shop, every restaurant, every coffee shop. She was nowhere.
Fear made its way up my body and stroked my heart.
Where did she go?
I instantly hoped nothing was wrong, that she didn’t get into an accident or something like that. That would tear my heart apart. Again, curiosity appeared inside of me, why in the world, I was so deeply connected to her...
I kept on looking. But still no sign. Then, suddenly a thought reached my mind.
My favorite place to go. It was my grandmother’s old Bed & Breakfast. Not far outside Stars Hollow. It once had been a beautiful little inn. It always reminded me of the Waltons’ house and as I was five or something like that, my mother wanted to restore and open it again. But well, she never did. Faith wanted her somewhere else. Since then, it was my own hiding place. Two days a year. On January 18 and November 12, the dates my mom and dad died.
I owned this place now, but never even considered to open it. Too much memories, too much hurt...
Single-minded, I walked down the driveway to the Dragon Fly Inn, as my mom labeled it, and I couldn’t believe my luck. On the stairs sat my mystery-woman.
Quietly and carefully, I sat down beside her and said,
"Your daughter and Mia are searching for you. They’re worried. And so was I."
She looked up.
"I’m sorry. I just needed some alone time. Time to think... I didn’t wanna frighten anybody."
I just nodded. I could reconstruct her feelings. But still, I didn’t get why she ran away from me. It had to be about that Christopher and as I looked into Lorelai’s eyes, I could see the same kind of fear in her eyes than a few hours before.
Carefully, I asked her:
"Lorelai, why’re you here? What is it about that Christopher?"
She said nothing, just stared out into the landscape.
There was total silence around us. No bird was singing, no car passing by. I almost could hear the snow reaching the ground.
Suddenly, after about ten minutes, Lorelai opened her mouth,
"Chris... Christopher is my... is my... my husband.", she stuttered.
"Husband? You’re married?"
I was shocked. I hadn’t expected that. Everything, but not that.
"Yes, I am. He’s the... the reason... I’m here. I just couldn’t stand it anymore. I mean, I tried. I really did, but he was too... he just never..." Her voice cracked.
I could see tears streaming down her face. I desperately tried to find an handkerchief but I had none, so I just hugged her carefully. A few moments went by in silence, then,
"Luke, can I tell you something?"
Again, I just nodded.
"Okay", she sighed, "I’m gonna start at the very beginning. Maybe it’s none of interest for you but I... I have to tell... somebody. And you are... you are..."
Again, she broke off. And again, I said nothing. I just looked at her closely.
Finally, she spoke further.
"Chris and I married when we were seventeen. Because of Rory, of course. But I thought, I loved him. I thought it was right. And it really worked out fine the first two years. He was totally in this relationship. He found a job, not a bad one, might I add, and cared about Rory and me all the time. I thought he was happy. But... but suddenly he was changed, like from one day to another. He came home late, was drunk or just bad tempered and..."
She broke off again and looked at me, then she put forward,
"Promise me, never to tell anybody?"
I was slightly confused and curious at the same time. Again, I felt incapable to say anything, consequently I just nodded again.
She caught up for air, cleared her throat and continued...
love, Ced
