Shippers: Lorelai & Luke, Rory & Jess
SPOILER: Nach der 4.Staffel!!!!
Paved Paradise: The Hospital
By: LadyCommish
Disclaimer: I donât own the lyrics to Big Yellow Taxi or the characters in this story. If there is an original character I own them
Donât it always seem to go
That you donât know what youâve got till itâs gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
âDragonfly Inn, Michel speaking,â the haughty French concierge said into the phone.
âMicel, get me Lorelai,â Luke instructed in a no nonsense tone. Michel was always playing games with him on the phone.
âLorelai is busy. Can I help you with something?â Michel asked, âIf itâs is for a reservation we are completely booked the next six weekends.
âMichel, itâs Luke Danes. One of your investors, Lorelaiâs fiancéâ¦just get her, I donât have time for this,â Luke grumbled.
âI cannot. Lorelai is not here,â Michel answered losing his high faultinâ attitude. Luke was not very friendly angry.
âWell, where is she?â Luke pressed. Michel was not a very helpful employee.
âShe didnât say where she was going, only that she didnât think sheâd be back today,â Michel replied.
âThanks, Michel,â Luke mumbled before hanging up the receiver on the obnoxious Frenchmen.
Luke was nervous. He was very nervous in fact. For the last few hours his stomach had been in knots, doing somersaults, and doing whatever other clichés stomachs did when one was unsettled. He didnât know why he felt as he did, he only knew that it had something to do with Lorelai.
Whatever it was, it couldnât be that bad. Could it? Lorelai would have called him if it was something really serious. Perhaps, he was just overreacting. He did that a lot where she was concerned, he worried about her constantly. He loved her that much. So much it often consumed his reasonable thought.
Just then, Babette bustled into Lukeâs Diner, âAll right, Sweetie. You can go now if you want too. Iâll finish up here and close the diner for you. Go be with your Sweetie Pie.â
âHuh?â Luke looked at Babette as if she were crazier than she usually was. This was strange even for her. âBabette, Iâm not going anywhere. Where would I be going?â Luke was really confused.
âLuke Danes, I canât believe you,â Miss Patty scolded coming in the diner, âYou should be with her. Lorelai needs you. I couldnât believe it when Kirk told me you were open.â
âMaybe thatâs because I have no clue what either one of you are talking about. What happened? Whatâs wrong with Lorelai?â Luke asked before Babette or Miss Patty could continue their rants.
âOh, you donât know?â Babette was now the one confused, âIâm sorry, sugar, I should have told you, I thought she would have called you, oh well, you know now so go on.â
âI donât know anything yet. Whatâs going on?â Luke was growing impatient. âBabette? Patty? Someone tell me what this is all about.â
âLorelaiâs parents were in a bad car accident,â Patty told him. âThey were both rushed to St. Michaelâs Hospital in Hartford. I thought she would have called you.â
Luke looked on stunned, âWhen did this happen?â
âA few hours ago, four at least,â Babette answered, âI really canât believe that you didnât know.â
âNeither can I,â Luke thought, but he said, âWell, would you mind keeping an eye on things cause now thatâ¦I have to go to her. You said St. Michaelâs right?â
Patty nodded and she and Babette watched Luke rush off to his truck, âThat true love,â Babette gushed to Patty, before she resumed Lukeâs former task of washing tables.
Lorelai paced the waiting room at St. Michaelâs Hospital. She couldnât believe it. In a flash her whole life had been turned inside out. Her father was dead. Her mother more than likely would follow; she was in critical condition and in surgery. It didnât seem real.
âLorelai!â Christopher called as he ran into the hospital with Rory, âLorelai, what do you know?â
âMom, how are they?â Rory asked trying to be brave for her mother.
âRory, sit down, okay,â Christopher told her, âLor, you too. Letâs talk.â He was so calm, so warm, in this cold. Lorelai unconsciously leaned toward that warmth. Christopher embraced her, âChris, Rory, um, myâ¦Dad, uh, Grandpa, was umâ¦he was killed in the accident.â
Rory felt like she had been kicked in the stomach. Grandpa died? He was dead? Killed? She heard it but it was trueâ¦She didnât feel like crying, she thought she would, she felt likeâ¦she couldnât describe the feeling.
Lorelai pulled away from Christopher and hugged Rory, âYou okay, Babe?â she asked devoid of emotion.
âYeah, Iâm a bitâ¦Iâm going to make a phone call,â Rory pulled away and printed to the pay phones. There was only one person she could count on at a time like thisâ¦at least she hoped she could. Heâd told her she could.
Luke made the thirty minute drive to Hartford in fifteen minutes. He was a bit troubled about why Lorelai didnât call him, but with all she had on mend he couldnât really fault her. Could he?
Luke parked the truck in the hospital lot and followed the signs admitting and emergency. Before he reached Lorelai, he almost literally ran into Christopher.
âLuke?â Christopher seemed surprised to see him, âWhat are you doing here?â
âI could ask you the same thing,â came the reply.
âI came when Lorelai called. I picked up Rory at school and came here,â Christopher said, âWho called you? Rory?â
Luke shook his head, âNo, I heard around town. Whereâs Lorelai?â
âSheâs over there, but I really wouldnâtâ¦â
Christopher never finished his sentence, Luke was all ready gone.
Jess Mariano heard his phone ringing through the apartment door. He fought with his key and got to it before it stopped ringing, âHello,â he said breathless. No one spoke, âHello.â
âJess?â Rory finally spoke, âits Rory.â
âI know who it is. Is everything all right? Is Lukeâ¦â
âLukeâs all right. Iâm allâ¦no, Iâm not all right. Jess, you told me I could count on you,â Rory reminded him.
âYou said no,â he reminded her in turn.
âI know, but I need you now. Jess, please,â she told him fighting tears.
âWhat is it, Rory?â Jess asked. If someone hurt herâ¦
âI need you to come to Stars Hollow. I needâ¦my Grandpa was killed and my Grandma mightâ¦and my Mom is reallyâ¦please, Jess I reallyâ¦
âRory, you sit tight okay. Iâm packing some things and Iâm on my way. Let Luke know Iâll be crashing at his place with him, okay?â Jess told her in calm voice. She was relying on him. This was his test and his last chance and he knew it.
âOkay,â Rory agreed, âJess, thank you.â
But Jess was all ready gone from the line and on his way home; to Rory.
Rory headed back to Lorelai when in clicked. Luke wasnât here. Hadnât Lorelai called him? If she had called him, he would have come. Rory made a mental not to check and headed back to her Mom.
Luke saw Lorelai through the glass window of the surgical waiting room. She was sitting elbows on knees, face in hands, she looked so small like that, so fragile.
âLuke?â Roryâs voice came from behind him made him jump, âYou are here.â
Luke nodded, âYeah, um, Patty and Babette told meâ¦how are you doing? Okay?â he asked giving her a quick one arm hug.
âYeah, um, my Dad is here,â Rory told Luke. She knew about the bad blood there.
âI know. I saw him,â Luke told her, âHowâs your Mom?â
âSheâs upset, but sheâs holding it together,â Rory told him, âHow was she when she called you?â
âShe, uh, she didnât call me,â Luke said, âI found out through the grapevine.â
âWell, Iâm sure sheâll be glad youâre here. I think sheâs sort of in shock,â Rory told Luke, âShe could barely talk when she told us about Grandpa being gone.â
Luke let out a long sigh and hugged Rory again, both arms this time, âIâm sorry, Rorâ¦And your grandmother?â
She shook her head, âWe donât know yet.â
Luke and Rory hugged a few more minutes then Rory pulled away, âCome on. Iâm sure Mom will be glad to see you.â
Lorelai sat on the couch waiting for Rory and Chris to come back. She absentmindedly turned her engagement ring around on her finger. She felt bad about not calling Luke, she really was, but if she saw Luke, her rock, her strength, she would fall apart. She had to be strong for Rory and her mother if she made it. She couldnât let herself fall apart.
The door opened and Lorelai looked up from her seat to see Luke and Rory come into the waiting room, âLorelai,â he said on a breath going to hold her to him, trying to be what she needed him to be, âIâm here now, itâs going to be all right.â
Lorelai let Luke hold her for a moment then pulled away, âLuke, you shouldnât be here,â she said.
âMom,â Rory argued, âLuke came all the way here and you didnât even call him. He wants to be here for you.â
âRory, itâs okay,â Luke said, âLor, thereâs no place Iâd rather be than right here with you. The dinerâs covered, itâs no problem,â Luke assured her.
âLuke, Iâm glad you came, but I really donâtâ¦I have it all under control,â Lorelai told him, âGo home and let Michel know I wonât be at the inn for a few days.â
Luke was confused. She seemed happy he was there, but she was telling him to go. She said she was in control, but she seemed upset and confused. Luke pushed a littler harder, âI can call Michel from here. Iâm not leaving you here alone, Lorelai. I canât do that.â
Luke was not a man of words. He was a man of actions. He never said, âHappy Birthdayâ to Rory, he just made cake. He never said, âI love you,â he just touched and kissed and gifted with roses. He never said, âWill you marry me?â he just left a ring on a saucer. So for Luke to say in words he couldnât leave Lorelai alone had a lot more meaning in his case, for in Lukeâs case his words sometimes spoke louder than his actions.
âIâm not alone. Roryâs here and Christopherâ¦â she told him.
âIâm not leaving,â Luke reiterated, âConversation over.â
Lorelai wasnât one to be defeated, but right now she didnât have the desire or the energy to battle with Luke. She wanted him there, but she couldnât allow herself to lean on him. She couldnât fall apart.
âOkay,â Lorelai capitulated, âGet me some coffee, Burger Boy,â she half smiled at the nickname sheâd given him.
Luke left in search of coffee and Rory sat down next to Lorelai, âWhy didnât you call him, Mom?â
âThatâs complicated, Rory. I donât want to get into it. Heâs here now,â Lorelai said almost relieved, âYou didnât call him, did you?â
âNo,â Rory shook her head, âBut I was surprised that you didnât.â
Lorelai just sighed, âWho did you call?â
âPromise me you wonât get mad,â Rory said as preamble.
âAll right,â Lorelai agreed, âWho was it? Dean?â
Rory shook her head, âNo, Mom. Dean and I are really over. It was Jess.â
âJess,â Lorelai repeated, âJess Mariano?â
âYes,â Rory replied.
âJess Mariano, as in Lukeâs nephew Jess, as in bad boy rebel Jess, as in unreliable heart breaker Jess? That Jess?â Lorelai asked completely stunned at her daughterâs choice of supporters.
âYes, and I donât know why so donât ask me,â Rory warned, âLast May after Lizâs wedding, Jess came to see me and told me he wanted me to go away with him. I said no, but he toldme I could count on him now. I remember that today when you told me aboutâ¦about Grandpa. Something made me remember that,â Rory explained, âHeâs on his way here as we speak.â
âI hope he meant it, Sweets,â Lorelai said flatly. She knew somewhere deep inside Jess he had love for Rory. If only she didnât see so much of Christopher on his surface.
Christopher returned with a few newspapers and magazines and Luke returned with coffee. Lorelai drank it slowly as the clock ticked on without word on Emily.
Rory thumber through the newspapers and magazines Christopher had bough. There were Cosmo and Glamour, Time and Newswekk, and Barrons. Barrons, Grandpa loved that paper.
Rory felt her eyes tearing but before she could cry the doors opened anda tall doctor in surgical scrubs stepped out, âLorelai Gilmore. Iâm looking for a Lorelai Gilmore.â
Lorelai stood up, âIâm Lorelai Gilmore,â she said stepping up to the doctor. Luke and Christopher moved in behind her, but she waved them off.
âMiss Gilmore, follow me please,â he instructed and she followed the doctor to the restricted area.
Dr. Salda took Lorelai into his office, âSit down, Miss Gilmore,â he told her, âI know you had a hard day. Iâm very sorry about your Father.â
âThank you, now letâs cut to the chase. Howâs my mother?â Lorelai asked pointedly. These doctors were ridiculous.
âMiss Gilmore, your motherâs injuries were very serious. We had to do surgery to remove her spleen and control the internal bleeding. However, your Mother was too weak and her heart stopped on the table. We used all our capabilities and tried to revive her for thirty-one minutesâ¦â
âSo sheâs dead,â Lorelai finished, âWhy did you bother with the whole speech if sheâs dead. It doesnât mean anything anyway, why or how longâ¦Sheâs dead is all that matters the rest of that is just smoke filled coffee house crap,â Lorelai shouted tears leaking out of her eyes.
âCan I ask someone to come in for you?â the doctor asked understanding her tirade.
Lorelai shook her head and took a deep breath, âNo, Iâm fine,â she replied, âI have to tell my daughter now.â
Meanwhile, Jess had arrived in Hartfod. Rory had told him there was an accident but she never mentioned what hospital they were at. He had to get that out of Caesar. Jess looked around. Hartford was busy city like New York but friendlier, safer. He stopped someone, âMiss, St. Michaelâs Hospital?â
The lady pointed to the large building about ten blocks away, âItâs there, with the red cross on it. The number 12 goes there, but itâs faster walking this time a day.â
Jess thanked the woman and headed off in the hospitalâs direction in a sprint. Rory was only ten blocks away and she needed him. It still amazed him . She had called him, not Dean, not Lane, him. Jess Mariano. Unreliable, untrustworthy, Jess Mariano. Heâd promised her six months ago she could count on him. Now ti was time to prove it.
Lorelai made sure she was under control before she went out to the waiting room. This was going to hit Rory hard. Sheâd never lost anyone close to her before, except for a hamster. Lorelai hadnât either come to think of it, she didnât know how to do this.
Luke took one look at Lorelaiâs face when she returned to the waiting area and went to her. He knew Lorelaiâs brave look very well, heâs seen it enough when she got back from a Friday night dinner. âLorelai?â he asked softly, his voice so gently it threatened to shatter her resolve.
âRory,â she called out, âcome here, Baby.â
From Lorelaiâs tone Rory knew what had happened, she immediately ran to her mother and began to cry. Luke moved to hold both of his girls, but Christopher was up and moving to them. Lorelai opened her arm towards Christopher and Christopher, Lorelai, and Rory shared a family hug.
Luke stayed close, not intruding but par of him felt anger and jealousy. Christopher was never around for Rory, he was. Christopher was never Lorelaiâs supporter, he was. He should be comforting them, not Christopher. But, he was not family, yet, Christopher was.
That was the scene Jess walked in on. Luke quietly brooding, looking on as Christopher, Lorelain and Rory hugged.
âLuke,â he said flatly.
âJess,â Luke said surprised, âHow? Why?â
âRory called. She said she needed me to come I take it the news is not good,â Jess said.
Jessâ familiar voice penetrated Roryâs grief clouded mind. She pulled out of the hug, bringing it to the end and went to Jess, tears streaming down her cheeks. Jess caught and held her tight to him, âIâm here, Rory,â he whispered, âItâs all right, Iâm here.â
Lorelai crossed over to Luke, who reached out for her hand, âCould you take Rory and Jess home for me? I have some things to take care of here.â
âDo you want me to stay with you? Christopher couldâ¦â
Lorelai cut him off, âIâd rather you be with Rory and Jess. Iâm going to be fine. Christopher is here with me. Please Luke,â she begged him with her eyes.
Luke nodded, âAll right, Iâll take them to your place. See you when you get home,â he said kissing hers lips lightly before turning to leave. Jess collected Rory who was still sobbing against his chest and moved for the exit. Lorelai called over her shoulder, âLuke, thank you for this. You take care of her.â
Luke nodded, âI will,â he said, âLor, I love you.â
âI know,â she nodded, stopping her tracks, âI love you too.â

Hi Leute...

âDas is so anstrengend.

Where You Lead â Carole King
Wanting you the way I do
I only want to be with you
And I would go to the ends of the earth
Cause, darling, to me that's what you're worth
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
If you're out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I'll be there on the next train
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
I always wanted a real home with flowers on the window sill
But if you want to live in New York City, honey, you know I will
I never thought I could get satisfaction from just one man
But if anyone can keep me happy, you're the one who can
And where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
