Lorelai felt someone approaching and coming to a halt in front of her but she didnât look up, hoping that this person would go away sooner or later. When he didnât, she grew annoyed and looked up with a scowl âWha-â
The words caught in her throat as she saw who was standing over her âHeyâ¦â he said softly, crouching down in front of her. She merely held her hands out like a little child, whimpering, so he slid his arms around her waist and pulled her up into a tight hug.
She clung to him as if she was drowning, clutching his shirt in her hands, her insides warming as she smelled his mingled scent of coffee, diner and cologne, calming her immediately.
He rubbed her back soothingly, a feeling of helplessness washing over him. So he just held her, swaying her gently in his arms. âHey, itâs okay sweetie, everythingâs gonna be alrightâ¦â he trailed off, not knowing what else to tell her.
After half an hour the paramedic tapped Luke on the shoulder once more, gesturing to the ambulance car silently.
âCome on hon, we have to go to the hospital to-â
She shook her head vigorously, terrified âNo, nononono!â âThey have to-â âNOOO!!â she screamed in a high-pitched voice, her tone setting Lukeâs teeth on edge.
All the heads in the room turned as she tried to scramble away from Luke who held her at her elbows, trying to calm her âNo, no, no, no!â
She struggled to get away from him but he held on tighter, not aware that this was the exact wrong thing to do
âHey, fancy-face..â He began, but was interrupted by a piercing scream from her. âLet me go!â she panted
âWe have to go-â âLET ME GO!â she yelled at him so he did and she sank down on the chair again, still shaking her head, hugging herself.
Luke looked at her, puzzled, then realization kicked in and he got down on his knees in front of her âListen to me Lorelai!â She looked up at him, he usually didnât call her by her full name unless he was dead serious
âI know youâre afraid of what they might find out at the hospitalâ She whimpered at that so he covered her hands with his own âBut we have to go, theyâre the only oneâs who can really help you. Okay?â
She nodded hesitantly. âCome hereâ he scooped her up in his arms, carrying her outside.
