Lorelai grabbed all the newspapers she could carry, earning her a weird look from the stewardess and a - not so appropriate - gaze at her ass from the steward. Luke shooed her into the seating area and if looks could kill that steward would be a very very dead man.
âOooh here it is, 3 C and Dâ Lorelai squealed, dropping into her seat, bouncing enthusiastically. She ripped out the emergency manual and began studying. Luke handed Lorelais handbag to a stewardess who put it in the storage room above their heads, which was way higher above their heads than in Economy so not even Luke had to duck when getting into the chair. He stretched out his legs in the spacy gap between his seat and the seat in front of him, sighing contentedly.
Lorelai turned to him, all excited âIâm sooooo looking forward to Kitz you know, the cabin and everything cause itâs really beautiful and the slopes are awesome, Iâve already been there once and the people are really great, you know, laid back, not as hectic as Americans, theyâre doing everything very slowly, deliberately, not in a hurry et cetera et cetera and-â Lorelaiâs babbling, to which Luke was only listening half heartedly was interrupted by the stewardessâ emergency briefing.
She explained all about emergency exits, gas masks, swimming vests underneath the seat (Lorelai popped her head down there to make sure there really was one there) and by the end of her little speech, Lorelai had grabbed a hold of Lukes hand and held on to it so tightly he though she might crack some bones.
She swallowed dryly âLuke?â she asked with a shaky voice. He looked at her, furrowing his brow
âWhat?â
âDo you think itâs too late to tell you Iâm really afraid of flying and airplanes??â she said with an unfamiliar edge to her voice that made Lukeâs hair at the back of his neck stand up.
She jumped when the machines underneath them started up, rattling the whole aircraft.
âUh⦠I guess.. but donât worry, itâs gonna be fineâ He stroked her cheek with the back of his index finger while she chewed nervously on her bottom lip. Luke continued to soothe his girlfriend, who had turned a whiter shade of pale and was looking very nauseous. After 20 minutes the tower had granted permission for takeoff and the plane slowly rolled out onto the runway, maneuvering to the starting position.
Lorelai was shaking badly now, her bottom lip trembling. When the plane started taking off, speeding along the runway Lorelai only looked out the window, whimpering quietly.
Luke felt totally helpless so he just held her hand and reassured her that everything was going to be fine. When the plane finally left ground and the passengers were pressed into their seats with a funny feeling in their stomachs, Lorelai gripped the armrests of her chair so hard, turning her knuckles to bright white.
Luke couldnât take it anymore so he unbuckled his seatbelt, did the same with Lorelais and pulled her into a tight hug, ignoring the protests of several crewmembers. She eased up on her tension a little and he used the time to talk some sense into her. That she should think about their vacation, skiing, Kitz and not about the âwhat-could-happen-on a planeâ what-ifs. He sat her back into her seat gently.
âOkay?â he looked into her eyes reassuringly, she only nodded
âYeah, okay!â Even attempted a tiny smile for him.
âWanna look what movie theyâre showing?â he asked before settling back in his own chair, thankful for their Business class tickets.
A few hours later, they were already way out over the Atlantic ocean, Luke flipped thorough the board magazine, having read all other newspapers and tabloids available.
Occasionally he glanced over at his sleeping girlfriend who was curled up in a seemingly uncomfortable position in her seat, knees drawn up to her chest, head resting on her knees, arms folded around her legs, one hand holding his right one loosely. He soon got bored with the magazine, the board radio played insanely boring songs so he decided to pay the bathroom a visit.
He untangled his hand from Lorelaiâs and got up. He expected to hit his head on the ceiling but he was glad when he discovered that he was not big enough to do that. He waited in front of the bathroom for the other person to finish, shifting his feet uncomfortably when the stewardesses started shooting him dirty glances.
He looked the other way to his sleeping beauty and had to smile. He was so lucky to have her. Especially after the latest events.
His musings were interrupted by a man in his late 50ies who came out of the toilet, pushing his way past him. He stumbled backwards and wouldâve fallen if the stewardess hadnât reached out and grabbed his wrist. She beamed at him, pulling him up and closer to her. âYou want me toâ¦â she gestured to the bathroom with her head â..with you?â But Luke merely shook his head, too shocked at the obvious come-on from that woman. She let go of him quickly, retreating behind the curtain where the other stewardesses waited to discuss whether he was gay or impotent.
He had heard a lot about airplane toilets, that they werenât very spacy, pretty dirty and that you should try to hold it as long as possible when flying. But this one was different, it still wasnât huge, but you didnât feel like youâre in a tiny can, so that was a definite plus. The machines were louder in there so he couldnât her the tumult going on outside.
